I am wondering if someone knows whether clevis hooks can be used on van safety chains?

To cut a very long story short.
NO
Only D shackles with correct load stamped on them are legal.
I will sit back now as it is possible a can of worms might have been opened

Short answer is "No". If you do a bit of research you will find some scary photos of failed clevis hooks. I use latch hooks, and to avoid any issues regarding the mandatory use of "D shackles,I have one of those permanently included in each chain, with hammerlocks, and done up very tight so nobody can decide that they need the pins more than I do! The latch hooks are attached to the chains with pins similar to those in hammerlocks. Really quick and easy to hook up with one hand, even in the dark! Cheers

Just to correct something.
There is no legal or legislative requirement to have load rated shackles on trailer safety chains.
Whilst it is comforting and probably sensible to have them you can use unrated shackles quite legally.

below is a section from RACQ towing recommendations
if you google tour question there are a lot of answers all backed up by facts
looking quickly the ones in your link seem quite acceptable
Queensland's Department of Transport and Main Roads recommends that a shackle used for this purpose:
complies with Australian Standard AS 2741-2002 Shackles or other equivalent recognised standard; and
has a break load limit *at least 1.5 times greater than the trailers ATM.
However, this is a recommendation, not legislation. We strongly recommend using a load rated shackle.
I use Hammerlocks on my Tow Bar's Shackle points. Had a hell of a job trying to hammer the pins into the Hammerlocks.Ended up buying a cheap G Clamp and putting the pins in with that. Now I can just bend down and connect my trailer chains with a bow shackle instead of kneeling on the ground.( Always seems to be Gravel)
I checked a lot of Transport websites before fitting then to make sure they were legal.

Yobarr , is there an easy way to make sure you get a latch hook that will fit the chain ? , or should supplier know if you measure caravan chain and take info?

You certainly need shackles that can take it. However the stamped load rating is not a requirement. For example, my last two vehicles had 3.5t factory towbars - ADR approved of course, and the supplied shackles had no markings at all. If replacing, a stamped one makes sense for peace of mind.

I bought all my stuff at the same time,so easy to match, but if you take a rough measurement, and perhaps a photo of your chains etc,any lifting equipment place will be happy to help? I also bought a couple of hammerlocks so that I could play around with the length of the chains while I was setting it up,so that if the van parts company with the car,the towbar of the van will not be able to make contact with the road,as that is the law,I believe? Cheers.

Brian
and off course.... they reffer to a break limit.... not the working limit ..... so a pair of rated 1t shackles could be used on a 3.5t van.

The load limits stamped on the shackles is a lifting load rating. Whilst it is at least something, it is not necessary representative of the loads that would be imposed with a van coming loose. This is the reason that it has not become law to use rated shackles as the rating does not apply to a towing application.

Seems ludicrous to have rated chain per VSR but not shackles, however as most have said, for peace if mind, why wouldn't you.

Yobarr ..
I have read your contributions to this thread & have diligently searched some of the terms that you use, like hammerlock, latch hooks, clevis hooks etc & can't for the life of me understand what your set up is.
Could you please give me some peace of mind by posting a photo of your set up.
It would be most appreciated.
ps. I just use the unmarked shackles that came with the van 20 years ago. I painted the pins yellow just like the rated ones. LOL.

Having a 200 series I have rated latch hooks attached to the van chains with hammerlocks and the hook fits the loops on the cruiser tow bar area. Very easy and simple to hook on.

Yobar, a private message to another member is useless to all others on the public forum.
You seem to delight in supplying information in a private manner as this happens quite regularly with you on this forum.
Is there something that none of us but Cupie should know.
Could you please post a picture of your set up so that we may all benefit by your knowledge?
Or failing that can you send a PM at least all the members that have up until this point, participated in the topic.
If this goes against your grain then could you please PM me with the details that you have shared with Cupie.
Thank you

That is very similar to my setup, but I also have included a 'D' shackle in each chain to circumvent what I have been informed is law? Seems that a rated shackle must be used with each chain(?) so I have two shackles locked up so tight that they cannot be easily undone, thus meeting this alleged requirement. The shackles are attached with hammerlocks so they cannot be "borrowed" by anybody who thinks that they need them more than do I.Whether or not this is actually law,I do not know, but for the sake of a miserable couple of dollars I have covered all the bases, and I can show that I am indeed legal, avoiding the need to argue with any officials! Cheers.

Havent heard of that as law Yobarr. I did check with the local police and told them what I intended to do and they said I had covered the bases well as far as they could see. It could be a real minefield if various states got serious with shackles, but I cant see it happening as too many other important things for them to follow up on.

Yeah, not sure if it's law,but it is something I heard somewhere. For the sake of a couple of dollars,I've covered the bases! After years on trucks, where I once got written-up for a cracked glass in a reflector on my second trailer,I have learned that many officials have no idea what they're talking about particularly with weights. But they always win, because if you prove them wrong, always they'll win by writing you up for something petty, such as reflector lenses,or logbook hours......but that's another story! Cheers

Yobarr, when you communicate in a lot of your posts, you have a habit of using the incorrect terminology for many references so a clear explanation or vision would be helpful to all.
When you did it in previous weight related posts most of the information was eventually corrected by others so as to clarify the meaning but unfortunately the end result was that we lost the topics due to the admin having to act and lock those topics.
We may use google and other search engines but if your terminology is incorrect in the first place then we are all in the dark.
Well we are all in the dark except one member who apparently received a PM with the information.
I am basically in the same boat as Cupie whereby he could not decipher your description and to be honest, neither can I. Just read his post above.
I did google the parts mentioned in these posts but I found one of the items I googled was related to some sewing procedure.
It surely is not that hard for you to describe what you may have given out privately so we all may see and assess our options.
So I ask once again, if you choose not to post the information on the open forum, how about just send me the information on a PM the same as you have done for another member.
Thanking you in anticipation
