Hi I have heard that you can put Napisan in the toilet system instead of tablets . Would anyone know the mixture amounts and if it is safe to use . Thanks

100% safe.
We use 1 teaspoon per #2, added dry so it dissolves and releases its oxygen slowly.
Cheers,

Like Peter said perfectly safe . That napisan question though will invoke many different opinions on dosage used. Me after emptying just pour in a cap full and add a little water , slosh the canister around a bit and thats it . From time to time may add a few drops of eucalyptus oil for our pleasure. Note for Napysan to work its wonders you need to do nb 2

Soda ash ( as used in swimming pools) does the same job . Percarbonate of soda is another name for it . Its used in Nappy San . Also used to clean beer lines . Very safe .

Graeme soda ash is sodium carbonate not percarbonate it is a different chemical and is used to increase the pH of pool water. Sodium percarbonate breaks down in solution and releases oxygen which then breaks down the No. 2

Not so. Dose a quite different job.
Soda ash is Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3 )which is an alkali and chemically totally different from sodium PERcarbonate (Na2H3CO6) which is an oxygenator.

Napisan or similar is fine, we've been using it for almost 10 years without problem.
We add about 3 teaspoons of Napisan to the tank after each empty along with a teaspoon of eucalyptus oil to help with odour control.
The active ingredient Sodium Percarbonate is also found in similar products, i.e. Vanish etc, look for approx 30% Sodium Percarbonate content, even the cheapies seem to be around the 30% mark.
As a matter of interest, I use the same stuff to back flush my espresso machine. its a great cleaner.

I used the nappisan equivalent for many years (a cap full with water per recharge & empty every 3 days) but have changed back to the commercial chemicals.
The nappisan stuff worked OK but I prefer the perfume of the commercial chemicals & the cost is not so much in the scheme of things. If I were on the road full time I might look to use the cheaper option.

Cupie, you have a valid point. We are on the road permanently, and use a napisan equivalent. If not on the road full time cost would not be an issue.
BUT, we did find, before switching to the napisan equivalent our cassette was building quite a scum, since using the non commercial chemical, we no longer have this issue..
For those interested, our ratio is 1 1/2 dessertspoon napisan in empty cassette, plus one dessertspoon per #2 and a squirt of water with a dribble of eucalyptus oil added, swished around the bowl. (PS, our dessertspoon is dedicate to this task)

Please:
If you use the commercial chemicals (Thetford et al) *please* do not empty your toilet in bush toilets or septic systems as the chemicals will kill the bacteria which keep those systems working. These chemicals should *only* be emptied into a town type sewage system.
I use Nappysan (or similar) at 35% sodium percarbonate at about half a cup per 20L toilet tank premixed with 1.5L water. I put loo paper in a plastic bag and burn that every few days. This all works well and all in the loo tank is liquid when I empty it. It is OK to empty Nappysan into bush toilets.

Mike's post got me thinking about the 'safety ' of commercial chemicals so I had a look firstly at the Thetford site but couldn't find any iseful information. Perhaps I didn't try too hard so I went to the site below.
Perhaps the OP (Gabby) should read this excellent guide.
Looks like I'll have to change from my favoured 'Blue' to their 'Green' product & be careful where I dump it.

The best solution is fit an SOG ("Smell Orl Gone") from Aussie Traveller, may seem expensive but once only cost fabulous gear have had ours boy 12 years. No chemicals at all empty it into a Septic if you had to.

I used the no name stuff in my canister many moons back but when I saw the scale left in bucket over time I stopped. I didn't want that building up in the canister and the possibility of damage to fittings etc. I now use Thetford Blue or Green Sachets.

We were at a camp in Tassie (Left of Field at Mt Field) and the owner was adamant we couldn't use the blue stuff - only green or sodium percarbonate. Reason was that the blue stuff wrecked his expensive septic/sewerage system. Cost him $5,000 last time.

Haven't been able to buy the "BLUE" Aquachem here in Tassie for many years, so must have either been old stock, or an "import".
Used to use a green potion, but noticed a build-up. Switched to a cheap laundry whitener, but with 30% s.p.
When emptying, we put a bit of cold in the canister, then mix a capful of napisan/or equivalent with hot water in a reserved container, then when bubbled up add it to the canister but clear of the seals, add a bit more cold. Occasional spray with cheap olive oil cooking spray to lube the seals.
The canister gets cleaner as you go. Noticed this with our three van canisters, plus our two shack chemical beasts.
Need the hot water to properly activate the sodum p. powder. Need the cold to save the plastic. Need to clear the seals to save them.

I am another proponent of the SOG Kit. For a once only cost of <>$270.00 there are no more chemical costs, chemical smells, poo smells or hassles on where to dispose the cassette contents.
Simple DIY installation makes it a No Brainer.
Cheers Neil

My comment related more to the cassette being in place and in use but, as to emptying, I tend to hold my breath doing that job so I'm really not sure.

I have used Nappisan or Boost for about 10 years, in both a caravan, and motorhome
The amount I use is 1 cap full of the Thetford C200 toilet cassette, which is 75 ml in volume
As the cap of the toilet cassette is usually wet, when I empty it, I have cut a 2 litre milk bottle in half I then put 75 mililitres of water in, and made a mark on the bottle
When I redo my empty toilet cassette, I put approximately (it is never exact), 75 ml of napisan or boost, and one litre of water

Napisan and all the other brands of "Oxygen bleach" make gas. Its how they clean your clothes.
I got sick of the pressure spray of water up the jewels every time I opened the seal, and if I did it before I sat then I copped it in the face.
Pharrrrrk!
Sure, oxy wash power might be cheap from the likes of Aldi but you got to add more every time you use the can.
The chems are so cheap and safe these days, why scrooge it.
Thetford now have 750ml concentrate bottles (equiv to the old 2L) that do 5 days and 13 empties. That's over 2 months for $15.
That's less than $100 a year for, safe for septics, no smells, no gassing, no brainer.

hylife, this is why the S.O.G systems work so well.they vent to exterior of van,,,so no positive pressure in cassette. this coupled with fan extraction when the slide opens leaves no fumes in the toilet area..plus the percarbonate for breakdown of course.

I've used a locally made chemical - Enviro PTC from Advance Chemicals. Cheaper than the similar commercially marketed products and formaldehyde free. Works well and is simple to use. You can buy direct from them when you are in the area. (Altona Vic)

Hi all; We have been using the no brand napisan for years and with our pop top caravan that is coming up 9 years old i have just replaced the seal in the holding tank where the slide door activates. Had to remove the whole upper part of the mechanism to access the seal . But having a look at the inside of the holding tank and the condition was like brand new. No scale anywhere inside of the tank !! I now have replaced the slide seal ( was leaking a bit ) and all good. Job done ( sort of speak ).

Most cassettes have a pressure relief valve that is automatically opened when you slide it in.
SHouldnt get pressure build up
