We are currently heading towards Port Augusta and we have been advise that was no longer a great town to stay in due to roaming packs of people
that will put you in a sense of danger even if you purchase your supplies at the wrong time of the day. We would appreciate any comments on this

There are much more confronting and problem areas and towns than Port Augusta.
Take normal precautions like locking van and vehicles overnight, but walking around during day and shopping etc is fine.
If you are worried about overnight, the caravan park in Stirling North, about 4km out of town, Adelaide side, is quiet and reasonably priced.

Port Augusta is a great town.
Pick your park. The bigger parks have security and are awesome.
We have done Perth to Victoria 32 times now and always stay in PA.

Just use some common sense and take the normal precautions.
Stayed there many times

Port Augusta is no different to many other towns and cities.
There are certain places to be wary off at certain times of the day or night. There are places in Adelaide I would not venture into at certain times.
Good old "common sense" comes into play here me thinks!

If you go to regional QLD, ensure you lock your doors, keep your car keys hidden away & very secure! We have "kiddy crims" aged from 8 years old! Yes they can drive automatic cars but don't expect it to be in good condition after they've raced their mates in another stolen car!
Pt Augusta - I can vouch for the Shoreline CP - they lock the gates at around 10pm (you make arrangements with them if you're going to be out late).

I've read the posts. Where is the racisim? Folks jump to conclusions. Read what they want between the lines. PC is the new enemy.
I've been to these sorts of places and had the crap belted out of me. By a group of drunks that all looked like me. Every where you look you can find trouble makers. All types of folks. But we dare not point out the villains in case we are called racists. PC trumps the law.

I don't agree with the "Racism at it's worst". While the post may be a bit strong on the crime question, it does not specify it as a youth problem or point fingers. The same can be said for Warren-Pat's post about regional Queensland. The fact that we immediately jump to conclusions and put our own interpretation on what is really meant, highlights that there is a problem that many want to suppress from discussion. The answers to the original question could be summarised as "No, you were told wrong. Just take reasonable precautions".
I too have stayed in Port Augusta for a couple of nights. I did not see any evidence of crime being a particular concern. Taking precautions is however a good suggestion.

Kid yourself if you like. Turn a blind eye. But it is racism and needs to be called out as such.
This country and its people are highly racist and that needs to change.

I find people making any suggestion of racism in the OP to be people with some guilt complex over racism.
The OP asked a question which contained no suggestion of ethnicity at all.
There are areas of Perth I would not go to at night and the reasons are none that involve any race or ethnicity issue, just some less than desirable characters of all kinds. Does that make me a racist or just a cautious sensible individual who does not take unnecessary risks?
Turning this into a question of race is PC at it's worst and you know what they say about PC.
It is a theory thought up by an unintelligent and dillusional minority and promoted by mainstream media on the basis that if you try hard enough you can pick up a turd by the clean end.

I love how some play coy with what is meant by a post, when they know full well the intent and inference.
That said, if certain groups are responsible for problems, I cannot agree that to acknowledge those groups involvement is racism.

Makes it even worse. Maybe we should ask those who are the target of these "non racist" questions and see what they think?
There are 6 or 8 towns in Oz where these exact or similar questions as asked by the OP pop up from time to time.
We all know which towns they are and why the questions are asked.
That makes it racist.
Yes we can all kid ourselves that this is not racist, but it certainly is and there is no justification for it.
Cheers,
Peter

Ok Peter let's not talk about crime because it's racist. Let's not talk about gender because it's homophobia. Let's not talk about women because it's sexist. Let's not talk about climate because those against are deniers. Let's not talk about economics because some folks are capitalists.
Lets just hide under the bed and pretend everything in the world is just dandy. Calling someone names gets you nowhere. Looking for a name to call someone isn't a solution. No matter how much you wish it was. Reading between the lines is a very bad habit.

Much of the crime in most larger centres like Pt Augusta, involves illicit substance abuse.
This is not contained to any ethnic group but unfortunately appears to be worse in lower socio-economic areas.
Dependent on location, the face of the racial groups involved in this lamentable problem, change, but it certainly isn't contained to just one or two ethnic groups. It is an all enveloping issue.
For arguments sake where I live, most crime is committed by white Caucasian individuals. So because I have just suggested that, am I now racist?

Have you concidered stopping a Quorn about 30 km north of Port Augusta or Port Germein south of Port Augusta or even Melrose of Wilmington. They are all nice quite little towns and may find the caravan parks are cheaper too
