I don't have any specific use in mind and am concerned that after a few weeks I'll become bored with it.

Hi Mike.
Like you I feel it would be a 5 mimute wonder but I do have some radio controlled sailing boats, 3 ready to sail, 1 moored and demasted waiting for the right moment to repair. One being built from a secondhand hull.
I enjoy the quiet things in life these days, no screaming motors, just let the breeze blow my boats around.
I thinking five minute wonder.

I heard a buzzing noise above me just the other day and went out to investigate and there up in the sky it wasn't superman, but a drone buzzing around. The bloke was just across from me with his controls so went over to have a chat as have been also thinking of lashing out. He had a 'DJI Mavis Mini 2' and the images were amazingly clear, even the very high up ones. It looked easy to operate and had great range. At one stage I could hear it but couldn't even see it. A bit dearer so not sure the difference with that one and the one you are looking at Mike. I was looking at that HiFi mob too.
My main problem for not rushing out to get one is I would be afraid of it crashing somewhere I couldn't get too to retrieve it.
Keep Safe on the roads and out there (and around drones)

Just another hi-tech toy, which may or may not amuse you until the next thing comes along.
Of course if you have a use for it, fair enough, I cant imagine how it could possibly benefit me.

I have been in a helicopter, hired aerial balloons & used tall poles up to 12m to take aerial photography for architectural work.
Effectively retired from architectural involvment, but would be happy to do some work if I got bored.
I couldn't be bothered with aerial photography when there is so much to be seen from ground level.
Since you camp out in the bush Mike, invading someone else's privacy ( next door neighbours, nude sunbathers etc ) with the high resolution camera's they carry is unlikely to occur. They are also a hazard to aviation when flown in controlled airspace or near any country airfield, CASA has quite firm guidelines about that and large penalties for rule breakers. In cities like Perth you see a few being flown around neighbourhoods and most people hate them. In this regard I like what disgruntled Americans regularly do, march inside the house and return with a 12ga stuffed to the gills with buckshot.
ps you can also operate drone's via TPV or third person view, put special goggles on (radio linked) while flying the drone and it's just like you are sitting in the drone while it's in flight.

You are limited in some areas like National Parks, in some states like SA its illegal to fly a drone in them at all. Also restrictions near airports, I think 5.5kms without looking it up. There are various free apps that give you clear info on if you can fly in the area you are in at the time

i seen one that was reduced down from$150 to $ 50 had a media card so could fly it then download pictures i thought for $ 50 i would give it a try . got it set up started it up took off an crashed it thought to my self better get out in the open . got it going again it took off was doing real well up ,down, left ,right then i lost control went into some trees haven't seen it since. thought i seen where it went but dammed if i can find it should have found a bigger paddock.( or maybe if i read the instruction manual a bit more before trying to fly it) moral of the story read the manual , practice in an area it can't hide
Hi this guy has some very good information on drones. I Also find his videos really great to watch.

The solution around a drone would be to have it teathered like the old days with a balloon.
Maybe the first metre repeated a few times, a small weight so the teather will not be entangled in the rotary wings.
As long as it is teathered it can't be a drone as the rotary wings are simply lift as a helium balloon, as a photographic balloon is teathered, simple versions in the past were teathered. Usually shot in the morning due to lower winds.
One could set up a teathered system trial it & if there are any issues use have been using a teathered system. A few photographic records of the teathered setup to cover your back side.

I've been photographing for years. And made some good money out of it. The temptation to explore with a drone is getting hard to ignore.
Here's someone who is one the road and 'plays' with a drone. A truckie with a drone. Magic photos. https://www.facebook.com/thedroneway
Question - why can't I paste a link on these forums. What am I missing?

I have had a D.J.I Mavic pro for around 4 years now, and it truly opens up a new way to photograph things, a complete new prospective.
The only problem i have, is finding time to look at the video footage, and sort through the heaps of photos.
I am looking forward to using it a lot more when i am on the road, a life without the time restaraints.

I have a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced which I got second hand via a mate of a mate for a really good price. It's really easy to fly and the camera is pretty good - I've put some of the recent pics up here.
When I first got it I rarely missed an opportunity to fly it but, of course, the enthusiasm wore off and now I only use it to take photos when I can see that it'd be worth the effort to go through the exercise of getting it set up, etc. I consider it to be worth having though.
If you do get one, when you're learning to use it, the best tip I had was to take off fairly aggressively and straight up to 30 or so metres where there's less stuff to crash into. When landing I started out letting the drone do its own landing thing.
Another thing to remember that drone use is regulated by CASA so a bit of reading is in order as well as a phone or tablet app that'll tell you if it's OK to fly it where you are. I use OpenSky but there are others. The DJI app is pretty nifty and is essential. Another consideration is the "grunt" of your phone or tablet - I use either an iPhone 11 or a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7" which is a minimum - anything less and the video from the drone is really choppy and useless.
I'd say have at it and have a bit of fun.
If you need any more info just send a PM and I'll help if I can.

They are handy for business operators trying to impress customers. This photo is the frame of our new home we built ourselves last year. The company that supplied the kit used a drone.
A couple of years ago, a colleague at work and her husband did a big lap over six months. Using a drone, they had some impressive photos of their visitations.
I think I will control my urges (got to be a first time :) ) and resist the temptation of the drone for the moment.

Mike ... It's great fun and I am looking forward to flying on our next venture away ..I have owned a drone now for just a short time.. Brought a cheepy, so the cost of a crash would not be so costly... L900 . This little drone cost me next to nothing really, for what fun I have had with it. All the functions work and the cameras give me far better pictures than was expected... $ 160 bucks delivered Two battery version. Flying time approx 18mins per battery.. Not over weight 215grms.. Tried and tested straight back to your phone with all the vision.. So easy. Have fun.

Mike... Did a quick check and currently going at $150 with three batteries.. In grey, black and orange from banggood... The instructions say to fly out in the middle of an oval for your first three days of flying, and this is good advise... The drone has all the good things . Auto return when battery is getting low, one button take off and landing.. While you are getting the hang of flying within eyesight it can be flown without the phone connection.. When you are ready, connect the phone and open up a whole new experience..
if you have a play an lose interest ,not much to lose at this price

It depends on what you really want it for.
I find if looking for new ground prospecting, I can cover the ground far more quickly with a drone than on foot. It gives me a great overhead image so that I know exactly where to go.
I'm thinking of treating myself to a toy, a drone, perhaps this one:
