Wanda you are in denial if you think you aren't referring to politics.
Mariner30 what sort of logic do you have to think I'm referring to myself with an overseas asset? FWIW I have no overseas interests or assets.
Pointless discussion when all I was pointing out was some sympathy for those with overseas assets and I'm attacked by illogical arguments.

There is a lot of that about - we use to call it intolerance.

Well getting back on track. Lol
Id say the main issues with travelling overseas over the coming 2 or 3 years will be:
1 Trying to obtain insurance that includes covid is near impossible.
2 The possibility of been stuck overseas for extended of time because borders are closed.
3 If you get locked out of OZ the medical care may be limited and expensive.
4 Cost of travel at the moment is very high.
I suspect our OS travel plans are on hold for at least 2 years.

"Mariner30 you have no idea do you? Try maintaining an rv in the USA and getting annual registration inspections from over seas."
Don't know about Mariner30, but I do. We have owned a motorhome in the US for about 10 years and there are no problems with registration because there are no annual inspections at all, and it is permanently registered. Easy. Just as in Australia, you have to be smart enough to pick the right state.
The one we had in south America for several years was operated on the same basis.
The motorhome we have had in Germany for 10 years is just as easy. The company we bought it from gets the inspections done as required and registers and insures it under their name so all we do is hop in and drive away. Easy!
As for seeing Australia first. Some justification for that, but it isn't all that smart if you do want to travel overseas. Head off while young and you can get travel insurance and have plenty of energy and then when you are old and decrepid, come back and see the rest of Australia. Only 76yo so I figure we have a few more years overseas yet.
Covid? Yes, bit of a bugger, but we are back in Australia having bailed from the USA and on the road in our motorhome filling in a few of the spots we had missed on our two laps.
Just need to be flexible

Tony we have owned 5 different vehicles in the USA in the past 35 years. There are annual inspections. Many counties in many states impose inspections. Our last 3 vehicles were registered in Polk country Texas. (Home of Escapees). Polk has no inspection as it's in their interest due to the high number of locals, interstate and foreign owners). One of our vehicles was registered in Tarrant county, Fort Worth, and they had annual inspections including smog tests. But in the main we were lucky we stored at a dealer . We sent him an email and m/home and car we waiting for us serviced and ready to go. We've had vehicles registered in Georgia and Nevada. All different requirements. We also travelled to the USA more than once a year so keeping up with maintenance wasn't a big issue. Do pack rats in your air cleaner count as maintenance?
A year before covid hit I took seriously ill in the USA. There was a good chance I was going back to Australia as air freight!! Big $$$$'s. But that bad luck meant we had to sell up and come back home. So in that sense we were very lucky. I know of many who are now stuck here in Australia with no idea of how or when they will get back to the USA. I think the average Australian would be very surprised at how many Australians own assets over seas. Having a motorhome in a storage yard with no friends or contacts do keep an eye on it would be a worry. These folks have all be caught through no fault of their own.
The rest of the world we have seen via rail or shanks pony so I can't comment.
Tony like you we wanted to travel the world before the wrinkles caught up to us. Now we are forced by circumstances to see Australia long before we had intended to.
But I consider us to be very lucky and sympathetic towards those who have been caught up in the whole darn mess. No idea how someone with a house or unit gets to check their roof or shoo out the mice.

Pack rats? Been there done that. Had a pair build a huge nest on top of the engine and toured with us for several weeks. Any time we stopped they would duck out for more grass.
Eventually got jealous of what they got up to all night and decided to get rid of them. Decided a can of engine starter fluid was the way to get them. After all it is ether and we know just a whiff of either and the villain has got the damsel helpless.
Well, I saturated that pair of sex addicts from head to tail with ether and it barely slowed them down. I kept at it and eventually they said enough, we'll go and the last I saw of them they were staggering off in to the long grass. Their nest filled a couple of garbage bags.
Montana has no sales tax, no inspections and permanent registration so about as good as it gets. I do all maintenance that needs to be done.
Sitting in a yard in Albuquerque @ AU$100 a month. It's only money.
All our vehicles were bought on the basis that we could always walk away if necessary so if we don't get back to the US it is no big deal. The two year old Adria in Germany would be a bit harder to walk away from but it is in the dealers yard so selling it should be easy enough if things get half way back to normal

Tony I think almost 50% of states have inspection before registration.
The point I've been trying to make is that over seas travel had become very popular. Many many Australians purchased assets over seas. For everyone there's different circumstances. Some rich folks can get someone to do their tasks for them. But the majority are just ordinary folk who made a large investment of some sort over seas. Now their dream/money is all tied up and they are unable to do much about it.
Tony I can trump your story, sorry for the inappropriate word, with a frog story. A small brown frog that traveled with us for hundred of miles. Lived in the roof air conditioning ducts. And, croaked, us to sleep every night. Oh I caught him. Walked him a hundred yards away. How he found us again is a mystery. How he got up on the roof is a bigger mystery.

The frog mystery is easily solved.
There were two frogs.
And I won't bore you with the story of the seemingly unending number of Antichinus (Sp?) (marsupial mice) I trapped in our house and relocated.

"No point in having insurance with clauses like this :-
We will not pay for (under Section 2.3 or 2.5) caused by:
1. an Epidemic, Pandemic or outbreak of an infectious
disease or any derivative or mutation of such viruses, or
the threat or perceived threat of any of these"
I've had many travel insurance policies over the years and that clause has been in all of them. Ditto for civil unrest, insurrection, war etc etc
I hope the money hungry greedies don't put the pressure on to destroy this and we keep it going. With all the new strains about it will be harder than ever.
I am waiting to access Australia (Tired of NSW) to see new things.

Hi All
I too have owned motorhomes overseas as the very cheapest way I found of extended travelling in relative autonomy and comfort overseas. Whilst occasionally fun I have found most of the backpacker/walker type accommodation fairly rudimentary and or noisy or alternatively many of the really good ones can be not that much cheaper than local hotels. I agree that if you are storing an RV overseas just find a storage center or dealer who can help with these matters and pay a little extra for the service as overall you will still be saving a truckload of money on other modes of travel.
As for our current lockout of overseas travel which is sad as we may miss the opportunity to travel more whilst some of us still have the health to do so but it really pails into insignificance versus the pain and suffering so many are going through from just trying to get home to reunite with loved ones to illness and dying.
Even if we have really stretched financially to buy overseas as I did those who have done so are still likely to be not entirely on the poverty line or alternatively some may have the thrown the dice and expended near everything in the chase for new experiences. If one of those and having thrown the dice sometimes you come up craps and lose it all and that's just life.
PS I dont think there will ever be a cure for Covid and the world is eventually just going to find ways to live with it just like they have adapted to living with other diseases like regular Flu which usually kills hundreds of thousands each year worldwide as well.

No reason to be pessimistic.
We worked in China during SARS and that is when they got very good at locking down the whole country (and according to widely held rumours, got good at hiding the truth) and the world was in turmoil over it! Where is it now?
Same with MERS and a few others. Spanish flue even.
Why not Covid-19

I agree. In 3 or 4 years with the vaccine now available and learnings it will be a non issue.
Sounds petty but that's a lot of potential travel we will miss out on. We're all getting older.

Yes OldBloke, bit of a waste of travel opportunities - although our 20-year plan was to drive around the bloke a couple of times, then motorhome in as many countries as possible while we could still stand up without needing a walker, and then come back home where travel insurance isn't needed and fill in a few gaps and spend a few months in NZ.
SO all that has happened is we do the last section of the plan now and head back overseas when we can providing we can afford travel insurance which is going up every year.

Lots of folks, us included, planned to travel over seas while we had most of our marbles. Then travel Australia where not having all our marble may be the 'norm'!! I started of by offering some sympathy for those who have been caught out with the travel bans. I still feel for them although some thought 'stiff for them'. Sad reflection on those without empathy. We were lucky. We had our vehicle in a commercial storage area for the last few years. Apart from a flat battery we had no issues. But then we traveled to the USA twice a year. I got very ill and had to sell up in the USA. Then covid hit. My illness was a blessing in disguise as we would not have been able to do anything about our vehicle. I can imagine hundreds of Australians now who find themselves trapped in Australia with assets over seas.
There is a lot of that about - we use to call it intolerance.
