A wealthy Tanzanian once said to me, "with money and position comes great responsibility; for community, country and the planet". Shame more people don't think like him.

God forbid but I am on facebook side but...
I personally have not seen any difference in the past few days. My favorite groups are there, my fav people are there.
I can't believe how many people have sided with Murdoch and his cronies(&pollies).
don't care about news, I hear and see it on radio and TV.
And I cannot remember the last when I saw a news item in google that the link go straight to a paywall.
Old dinosaur new media have lost and they trying to hang on. You didn't keep up with the new technology and how people digested new and you snoozed at the wheel!
I hope Facebook wins its battle, and I'm pissed at google for giving in.

Facebook started as Social Media...to be in touch with friends and family. Keep to this parameter and it works well. Businesses and groups jumped on for a free ride to make profits and voice activist opinions.
There are other platforms to voice other than Social content.
It must be all true and comprehensible if it's reported on the Our ABC.
Problem solved

Yep, still here!
Hardly original.
Also sounds like Luke 12:48:, Winston Churchill, Clark Kent's father, Uncle Ben (Benjamin Franklin Parker) as well as numerous others, as a close friend in Texas once remarked to me when I got a little above myself "you ain't none of them"

I have a definite opinion on Facebook. Not all people are avid users of Social Media simply to keep up with news. Some of the commercial electronic media cannot even post a news article unless it is "breaking news". Further, it has been the custom of commercial electronic media outlets to openly use Facebook articles to fill in their 6pm news programs and when this happens, they are sometimes days behind the actual event. So the idea that Facebook is taking and using "news" at no cost is only half the situation; what about the commercial outlets using Facebook articles to prop up their own services. One is as bad as the other!
In relation to the use of Facebook itself, I have seen it used to very great benefit in the past 18 months or so to facilitate communication between families and friends during Covid. Facebook Messenger has provided a brilliant format for a lot of people (including older people) to keep in touch, communicate and seek help from others. It has also been used to great benefit so that people can help one another. It has also been used widely by grey nomads who have been caught out by the Covid situation whilst away from home base.
I look at social media like Facebook as a potential firearm. You can use it for a good purpose and go out and shoot a rabbit for dinner or you can use it for a bad purpose to launch yourself into the afterlife. Like a lot of things; it is not what it is OR could be, it is how you use it!
Just ask the people in Far North Queensland about the value of Facebook prior to and after cyclones.

Should Facebook then pay Australian tax on "profits" they make from advertising. Sounds simple but it's not as simple as it seems.

I only use Face Ache to monitor a locked health site (I am thinking of starting a forum instead of faceache as they closed us down for a while so nearly time to do some work and move to a secure site where we can set it up better to be able to easily gain info on medications and procedures as Doctors have no clue). I never post anything that identifies me on open facebook nor what I am doing or any photos. Have a sister who puts their whole lives on facebook cant understand why every one should know where they are and what they are doing etc. Bit like making the family watch the slides or videos every time they visit.
Same as I never post my activities on forums or add photos that identify me or where I am at any time, even though I no longer have wheels so no problem there.

Good on Facebook for taking the Government to task, FB is correct in what they are doing
Anyone can post what they like (within reason) on FB, many clubs, Government bodies, news outlets all avail themselves of this 'free' outlet to promote their 'wares'
So, Ch 7 (for example) decides to open up a page on FB and then starts putting their news-feeds up - that is a choice Ch 7 has made, they should be paying FB not the other way around. Ch7 has decided that they want to post on FB, it is not FB pinching their info and posting it on FB
We will never hear of the fine details that were reached overnight, because my bet is that the news outlets will have to pay FB to post their content on FB. Maybe in some small pocket FB will have to pay and that is what the Government will be trotting out as their resolution - removing egg from their faces
Just to be clear here, I am NOT a fan of big tech, but FB was right to challenge this

Seriously! Zuckerberg has a personal net worth of almost 100 billion US Dollars, an obscene amount of money in anyone's language, just in case people have problems processing this figure that's
US$100,000,000,000
FaceBook were simply being bloody minded re their actions over the Australian media.
It's difficult to defend the indefensible.

did you actually read and truly understand what I said?
To put it in a different scenario - should the caravan park pay you to stay there, use their facilities, power, space etc? Or should you pay for the service?

I enjoy FB.
I don't care about news feeds.
Family relatives and friends can swap daily occurrences on FB. Photos are shared.
I don't care about those that prejudge it.
