Way back when I was in my late teens I did a lot of wild pig hunting & to that end I had a dog bred to order; 1/4 greyhound & 3/4 English Bull Terrier. The Greyhound bit came from a failed greyhound bitch who rather than chase the lure would get stuck into the other dogs. Great attitude. The Bull Terrier bit came from a line of great pig dogs but I wanted a leggier & faster dog.
The advice about grabbing the hind legs of an attacking dog is good and reminded me of my approach to dispatching wild pigs. My dog was trained to hold a ear of he pig & I would grab the (diagonally) back leg, lift & stretch it while reaching under the body & do the job with a large 'bowie' style knife to the throat. Bit of a buggar if the dog let go while I had the back leg. I just loved going out after big pigs with just me, the dog & a knife (and on occasion an exWW2 45 Automatic).
Being a responsible dog owner I would take him for an extended walk of an evening, past as it happened a couple of my favorite pubs. He liked it too because the Publicans would pour him a beer in a bowl while I had one or two. Being responsible, as I stated, I decided that it was not good for me to be drinking so much, so I would take him to the front gate & let him go. Off he would race & come back an hour or so later puffing & covered in sweat. Working well I thought. That was until the neighbors started to complain. It seems that he as visiting all the dogs in the area and doing them over irrespective of whether they were chained up or not. Not good, so back to the Pub crawl we went.
He loved playing with my nephews & nieces. He would grab them by the ear & the tail really wagged as they yelled. But he never drew a drop of blood. The kids, spoil sports, never really liked the game & complain to this day about good old Butch (real name Rasputin) RIP.
