also have laptops and other goodies consuming precious battery capacity so could use over 120 AH a day.
I'm planning to change from 184L evaporative fridge/freezer to a 200L+ compressor at some point over the next year or so and my measurements indicate it'll consume around 1kWh of energy on 30C days. I now have 800W of solar so should be able to service this demand but one or two cloudy days or awkward tree coverage will see me reverting to the generator.
So now I need:
Generator 26kg ($2000!)
Battery charger
Solar panels 60kg
AGM batteries 60kg
----
I do sometimes wonder if I should stick with my current setup of the 184L evaporative FF and a 60L chest compressor FF in the vehicle which is a left-over from my 4WDing days.
I also run a compressor fridge in the ute. But I'm not adding more solar nor a 40 kg battery to keep a fridge going.
The 184ltr 3 way has been great so far. And since I have a home base and not full time certainly not worth the expense and don't need the additional weight in the van. (Yes weight does matter, but apparently not today) As for cost of gas I simply carry in the ute (where I have entered of capacity) an additional 9kg bottle allowing me to get gas cheap when it's available. Mind you I've never paid as much as $30 for a refill. I find it economical. Not buying a generator to use 1 or 2 days of the year either.
I agree it's horses for courses but they are still a good fridge. Almost anything you buy has pro's and cons. Just that some can't see past their own opinions. Of course if it isn't what someone else here has its crap.
my 3 way fridge works in derby with temps well over 30 if a 3 way fridge is fitted correctly they work plenty well enough as not everyone wants to spend a lot of coin on solar everyone to there own

Another one of your positive, enormously helpful comments,I see.Regularly on my travels I have seen 9kg refills for $60,and when I was camped near Derby a fellow camper was crying that he had just had to pay $85 for his 9kg refill.Because I have no need for gas in my van,I have no direct knowledge, but supply and demand dictates price, which is why an outback town in Queensland sells diesel for $2.30/litre.Sure,you can hunt up low prices in an attempt to ridicule my comments, but I simply relate my experiences in an effort to help others.Hope this helps you? And if you care to look at the attached pricing, you might like to reconsider your comment "don't let the truth get in the way of a good story".

Agree. Mine works just fine. Its like a lot of things in life, pros and cons. Often its simply compromise. For example some want to tow large 3t or 3.5t vans. Good luck to them. But I bet they are using at least 18 or 20 ltrs /100km. Now take my so called ****ty Triton by some here. You know, cheap and gutless. Well, that's just someone's unqualified opinion. Last short drive on the way home about 230k of 100% towing in to a head wind of about 20kph got 13.57 ltrs/100km. And that was typical. Five week trip averaged less than that. I'm happy with that.
my goodness Yobarr your playing with yourself again you said a bottle was 80 odd dollars in derby now it seems that was just hearsay and you put a photo of mount barnet roadhouse to show the price of gas in derby?? if you have been to derby you will know the roadhouse is at least 300 klms from derby its saying fuel is $1 90 in perth then putting up a photo of fuel prices in southern cross

Yes I spotted that too. Anything to win the argument or justify his very bias opinion. I guess the mods here will eventually wake up to him and do what the mods did on the caravan forum. Then we will get more positive posts, learn more and fewer arguments. Plenty of members are sick and tired of him.

Surely what is more relevant is the price that travellers typically spend on LPG, not searching for the dearest in Australia.
In my case, travelling up through the centre and down the east coast it averaged about $26 .... mixed refills and Swap n Go.

Surely it matters not where the gas cost $85 as I was simply pointing out that,in the bush,a 9kg bottle of gas can cost between $60 and $85.My energy supply (light from the sun) costs nothing, and is guaranteed to be there,in varying strength, each day.My post said that a fellow camper in Derby had told me that he had paid $85 for a 9kg bottle.Since we were near Derby,I assumed that he had bought the gas in Derby, and only started checking when someone disputed that figure today. But who cares? The point is that gas can,and does, cost up to $85 in the bush, just as diesel can cost up to $2.30/litre.Cheers

It's a 6-year old Dometic.
Today the fridge has shown -20 in the freezer and -7 in the general compartment.
Since ambient is around 20 overnight and 24 day I'm more than pleasantly
surprised with the results. Beats me how the thing is so powerful without
any mechanical assistance.
Can't imagine why one would need compressor 'fridges with their disadvantages
when 240v is not available.
I do not want to burst your bubble Brodie but when you readjust the thermostat to bring the fridge temp back to +4 then the freezer will be back to about -9.
I will stick with my compressor fridge.

Barry,
I have a bit of a trick for all that - I position the main compartment sensor either close to or away from the
radiator to get the cabinet temp where I want it. Depends on how often we are opening doors and ambient
temperatures. Generally speaking never have to mess with anything.
Rarely go into hot areas in summer, winter to the tropics, summer to south.
I have remote battery powered thermometers in both compartments that have max 'n min alarms so no worry.
The fridge has forced fan air both within the compartments that I have only had to use when packed to the hilt
and in the (radiator ?) at the back of the fridge - (Standard).
