Live and let live perhaps? If people annoy me I move on.
Camp fires are a basic aspect and requirement of human society and have been since the dawn of time.
Fire gazing is a form of meditation and is positive to our mental health.
Sitting around a fire with friends, or strangers, engenders a bonding process - it is hard to imagine developing social relationships in the bush when sitting around, say, a rock.
Collecting firewood is good exercise.
Man has been breathing fire smoke since the dawn of time - I'd not worry about any long term health aspects.
A camp fire provides an ambience.
A camp fire provides warmth and cooking capability.
I like a camp fire.
By the way: how's your car running? And the electricity at your home? Still polluting the planet?
Well said Mike, nothing I can add, camp fires are one of the joys of camping.
Life's tough Orid, tougher for some than others, get over it.
Totally agree with those above.
We have a campfire when there are no restrictions and the weather is a little cool. We cook on it as well and our campfire is never on the ground. Bush TV for sure plus I allways invite fellow campers to join us for happy hour and a chat.

Kids are the most at risk of asthma at the very least?????
we lived with all sorts of toxic, dangerous things in our early years, asbestos was every were you could buy opiates at the chemist cars had no seat belts/child restraints, rode m/cycles with no helmets, no OH&S in the work places, we had BB guns, air rifles, sling shots , they took the lead out of paint an petrol just to name a few
probably more toxic stuff still coming out of your exhaust pipe . if it bothers you a lot buy a good face mask. why should you have to buy a face mask why should people have to give up their camp fires because it bothers you.
as mike stated live and let live plenty of places you can go that don't allow open fires

Orid,
I understand you dont necessarily want to go into caravan parks, but unfortunately by choosing to free camp, you accept that the locations you go to may also include people who like fires, people who run generators, people who have loud music, and others who have other behaviours you may not agree with or enjoy. All those actions I mention are legal, if not to everyones liking, and those who do them have the same level of rights to do them as others have to not do them. Sometimes annoying, but true. I agree they should consider others, but those who decry their actions also need to consider them. It is a 2 way street after all.
That I am afraid is the cost of free camping. When we free camp, we accept that and have to put up with it. The alternative is, if you want rules, or uniform behaviours that are more socially acceptable, you need to consider using parks or commercial campgrounds. My comment to that effect in a prior post was nothing more than a statement of that fact.
That aside, trying to get people who like fires to stop, by appealing to some quoted facts re the dangers of inhaled smoke from camp fires is like pushing the danger of smoking to smokers, drink driving and the dangers of alcoholism to drinkers, and skydiving to skydivers. People only modify their actions when THEY are ready, not others.
It is a quandary that will not be overcome easily, and possibly not without more legislation, which would be sad to see.

as a note to above post some people who free camp do so because their there activities would not be acceptable in a caravan park

I'll repeat again. All I want is for campers to consider others be it with smoke, noise or whatever.
Yep.
Already happening. Fires are banned in many NPs already and where fires are not banned you need to bring your own wood with you.
Bring it on.

You should be cautious of what you wish, for "they" will not stop at banning just camp fires.
They kill you with incrementalism.

Orid,
You cannot go to a free camp or any unsupervised campsites and expect people to go by your rules.
If campfires bother you it is simple, Dont Go To These Places.
I enjoy a pub meal but the way a lot of pubs charge nowadays and the catering for screaming kids with playgrounds etc guess what.... I Dont Go These Places!
Caravan Park with no fire policy is your destination, like it or not.
Your closing line in the OP was "Let the flames begin", trying to ignite something are we?

I can tell you what pi...d me off the most, when they banned having fires on the beaches in Australia wide in 1989. I understand in rookeries and where turtles lay their eggs, but come on ratty old driftwood, on a beach as a young bloke, with mates and girlfriends , for an intimate party, it is just plain annoying that we cannot do it any more. As for not being very much a polluter, this is true when riding the bike, but, I do use a small gas hiker stove, a twig wood burner in winter and I smoke, so, I am not as blameless as some may suspect. When we c.van mostly in winter, my wife and I are solitary campers, nary do we ever have other campers near us, as we camp in the most way out places imaginable, and have a fire for cooking and heating, as we do not have heating in our van. But the very rare time we have arrived, or are the first one's at a new camping area, that other vanners turn up to, I do ask them first, if it is going to annoy them, have never been told no, but our fires are kept quite small, just big enough for a billy can or our small dutch oven, or BBQ plate, One other thing that does annoy me, is they banned smoking cigarettes in all of Australia's National Parks, 5 years ago, so we don't go there, but camp fires are still allowed.

We have freedom of choice in Oz, if you don't like fires or generators stay at homec"....
Always sad how some people refuse to be considerate of everyone else simply because they think the best solution is for the majority to be tolerant.

All this talk about freedom of choice- lecturing to choose to stay home or go to a caravan park etc... what about the freedom of speech to voice your opinion?
What if you dont like or cant afford to use caravan parks? Then free camping is as much a right as you lighting a fire. But a few here are expressing their freedom of an opinion that most of you object to.
The objection put forward is that most/many/some campers are inconsiderate when it comes to encroachment of other campers environment be it smoke, loud music or other. And the answer from many of you is- buggar you taking my rights away, you shouldnt free camp
We all have to get along which means if we disagree then do so with some respect and try to cooperate by being reasonable not selfish.
My neighbour before lighting his incinerator knocked on my door asking if it was ok. We said yes and took our clothes on the line indoors and closed windows. Can we give the same courtesy at a free camp?

It's been well documented for many years that all particulates are not good for your lungs. Some are worse than others, that's all.
Wood smoke is made up of carbonaceous particulates.
I like to light the odd fire but not every day and I keep it small less work that way too.

I want to change the subject to those who ignore the rules about restraining BLOODY dogs.
I love dogs. My best friend ever was my dog. I have no issues with dogs in campgrounds. But when I step out of my camper onto a huge steaming fresh polly waffle then I tend to get a wee bit irate.
So I wonder if those who don't care about smoke from campfires are the same folks who let their dogs run free regardless of the rules?
Back to the main subject!!
