Having had qualms about AZ for all the same reasons as D Maxer, I went about reading everything I possibly could in regards to the vaccines from places such as the Thereaputic Goods Administration, the Lancet and other respected publications, rather than the rubbish presented on Facebook and other social media.
I do think that all Australians should have the freedom of choice as to what vaccine they have, so Scomo foisting my age group off to have no choice but AZ really did annoy me and he is off my Xmas card list come election time.
That said, what I read in my research showed that it was far better and safer to have the AZ vaccine than not at all and so I lined up for my shot. 2nd one in August.
The risk with AZ is so low that getting run over by a bus tomorrow, winning 60 million in the lottery, catching Covid or eaten by a shark are far more likely outcomes than getting serious side effects from AZ.
No vaccine is 100% effective so a certain percentage of vaccinated people will still contract the disease whatever that is. Covid vaccines are no different. But they substantially lessen the risk of contracting the disease or at least limits it to a milder form.
The only way in which we are going to beat this thing is to get to a reasonable herd immunity level, and from what I have read, all the experts put that as having 80 to 85% of the population vaccinated.
I completely understand D Maxers reluctance and whether or not you chose to get the vaccine is purely your decision, but I do encourage you all who are hesitate to go off and do some though research in the medical journals before you make a final decision.
If we are ever to get out of this mess we need to reach those vaccination levels.

Before the current outbreak of anti vaccinations we were in an unfortunate situation in this country where our original order of Pfizer was not honoured by those manufacturers in Europe.
It is what it is and therefore the only vax we had was the AZ.
Another problem from my research is the extremely low temperature of storage required for the Pfizer thus eliminating many surgeries and medical facilities that can handle that brand.
Most politicians in this country have made a complete hack of the roll out of the vax and media footage of our PM and others receiving the Pfizer and not the AZ has not gone well with some. This has been exacerbated by disgusting media reports and transmitting interviews from some so called experts that have been raked up from some unknown and unsubstantiated source.
I feel for those who are waiting, particularly if they are visiting aged loved ones but by the same token I would be pretty upset should anyone waiting actually took the virus into a facility that caused my aged relatives any distress or even worse, death.
I have no feelings for anti vaxxers, they are a threat to all Australians but I wonder how long we are all going to be subject to the inconvenience of dealing with Covid until 85% of us are vaccinated and we are then creating Herd Immunity.
Roll up your sleeves and do the right thing.

Rob, I don't understand why you feel the need to refer to people who don't have your confidence in the safety and possible side effects of AZ as anti vaxers. They are people who have a legal right and a capacity to make their own decisions on their medical treatment.
This banal war cry of "roll up your sleeves" what gives you the right to preach and give orders to others that are quite competent in making their own decisions.
I don't remember you being elected as the spokesperson for the Australian public.

I really thought I indicated a difference between an anti vaxxer and those who may be waiting.
I did this out of respect to you and your views on waiting to see what might happen. I dont have to be happy with your decision to wait, the same as you dont have to be happy with me asking for those who are undecided to go get the vaccine. Preaching from both sides..
While the rest of our population are waiting for the *wait and see* brigade to vaccinate we are all limbo as to being able to get on with normal life. This is worse with our *anti vaxxer* brigade as the number of these two groups is dragging our ability to reach Herd Immunity down to an unachievable level.
The title of this topic is about getting the vax therefor the comments I have made are no more preaching than are yours.
I am no more a spokesman for the Australian public than you are but at least I reluctantly consider your views.

I have to smile. The govt. is saying basically that by opening up the AZ vaccine to young people, Australians now have choice of vaccine. So stop winging and get vaccinated.
What about those over 60. Who by the way, were the concerned ones in the first place.
Not because of the AZ vaccine itself but because of the perceived discrimination and ageism against the older population. That hasn't changed. and they wonder why the tin hat brigade comes out in force. lol.
DMaxer wrote:

Maybe I am just naturally suspicious Mike. I do not have any problem with others having the AZ vaccine if that is their wish. What concerns me is that the boofheads only acquired one vaccine in large doses and then foisted that one on the general public whilst using a different one themselves. I have had all my other vaccines throughout my life including ones in later years for travel to suspect places in the world and had no concerns in doing so. All the tub thumping and insults from the AZ fan club has little effect on me as if it is as good and as harmless as they seem to think, then the presence of a presently unvaccinated person such as myself should have no adverse effect on their health as they are "safe".
________________________________________
That makes sense to me. Why are the AZ fan club so strident? They never offer any firm reasons or facts, just disparage those who differ in their views and are very willing to hurl insults and name call at every opportunity.
I'm happy to live and let live. Its none of my business what others do or believe.
Or maybe, just maybe, and I strongly suggest this strident fan club is just out for a fight, to wit just ignore and don't bite.
Cupie,
Another one of my great unanswered questions. The Doherty Institute, who or what is it.?
Generally, when I have looked into organisations with Institute in their names, they have been not for profit organisations that are largely Lobby Groups. They are groups of people who have the same aims or beliefs who do research into certain subjects generally with the aim of coming up with certain answers to support whatever they are lobbying about.
Why is the Govt so adamant the those over 60 cannot have the pfizer vaccine?

Covid 19 has crippled the world.
Covid 19 has crippled Australia as far as travel and business trade is concerned but with respect to those who have contracted the disease and died we have been so lucky, maybe because we are an island and maybe because we actually have 7 states of which we could contain the outbreaks as they occurred.
We also have only a handful of cities which are densely populated which has also helped to contain outbreaks. Our population numbers are very low which has gone to help the containment of Covid 19.
Compared to most of the rest of the world we have done so well so far.
We should never be complacent based on these figures so far.
We have had a bumbling Federal Govt and bumbling State govts who cant agree on how to deal with this, but are we surprised? No we still cant decide on a National Rail Gauge or workable Time Zones. We cant agree on vehicle specs or even some road regulations let alone modification rules.
Through all of this we have managed to keep the number of deaths to under 1000 so far which is the envy of most other countries.
We are good, we are achievers, we are a nation of people who have dealt with many adversities during our very short existence in Australia.
There are vulnerable people in our communities and we have mostly protected these people, much more so in most recent times.
We should be proud as a nation of what we have achieved.
I have not seen our nation divided as much as this Covid 19 pandemic has divided us.
This division comes from so many areas of our communities because we have such a diversified group of people representing our current population.
We need the population to unite and stop fighting each other in the control of this virus
We need the population to respect lockdown laws, quarantine regulations and right back to the basics of wearing masks and simple things like washing hands etc.
But more than that we need to ignore social media, we need to ignore the views from the front bar at the pub, we need to ignore the bombastic neighbour and the varying views of those on forums and actually source accurate information from medical staff and drug manufacturers and more so ignore the media.
Please read Greg 1s post at the top of this page.
Please consider all facts constructively and with an open mind so as achieve an informed report before making any final decision on how you may wish to personally handle your participation into how you will apply your efforts to deal with this pandemic.
I hope and trust that in the next few months our efforts to help with the control and eventual elimination of this pandemic will become more obviously evident to the majority of our population in Australia and then then combined with the effort from so many other countries through the world we will collectively be on top of this.
As a country and as a member of other world countries we have done this before in history .don't allow us to be dragged behind in this current challenge.
I write this with respect to Angies cousin who sadly passed away with Covid prior to us having any vaccinations available at that time and to all the other lives that have been lost to this disgusting pandemic.

Rob

My first (AZ) gave me a mild fever (lasted a few hours, didn't need paracetamol) and a mildly 'dead' arm for 2 days. Flu vax gave me nothing. Pneumonia vaccine laid me up for a week, left me sore 2 weeks. That was my last jab before my 2nd COVAX, about a month ago.
I was concerned about 2nd round side effects for AZ (I also had a client due for Round 2), according to my GP they are generally less after the 2nd jab. Neither of us had any issues.
Good luck!

I had similar affects with feeling cold and a bit tired along with a headache for a few hours.
As I said in a post above I get the same when I get my regular flu vax each year although I don't get that tired feeling with the flu vax.
I questioned both my doctor and the doctor who administered the Covid shot and they both informed me that what I was experiencing was my body reacting the the small amount of virus which is being introduced to my body. My immune system was working to control and eliminate the virus.
I do need to add that the administering doctor explained this to me in detail prior to me getting the jab.
The introduction of the virus is common to any vaccination, it is not reserved to the Covid 19 vaccination.
Both doctors mentioned that anyone without any affects at all may have a depleted immune system. Their words, not mine.

That makes sense (the immune system depletion). To be fair, I was exhausted and emotional when I got the flu jab this year, so may have had a mild reaction and not registered it as such. I was sleeping 18 hours a day those 2 weeks. And then I got home, headed back to work, no time to be tired...

I keep hearing about all previous vaccines that we took when we were younger and how effective they were and I agree. There are two things that trouble me in relation to AZ though. Firstly, all the vaccines I have taken throughout my life had been developed and tested over many years and were accepted virtually world wide. This is not the case with AZ. Secondly, I have never had a vaccine where the government has totally indemnified itself, the manufacturer and then the medical people against any claim whatsoever should anyone suffer adversely as a result of this particular vaccine AZ. I have conducted many cases for medical negligence in the past where patients have consented to a procedure but it has not succeeded due to negligence. This is the only time I have ever seen a total indemnity. If it is so great, why? It doesn't apply to the other vaccines, just AZ. Why?

Yes, this a self congratulating thread
Trying to flush out the antivaxxers? So you can raise a mob and fling abuse and hate speach at them?
This just came up on ABC internet. They must be reading GN. and answers my earlier question. "Why is the Govt so adamant the those over 60 cannot have the pfizer vaccine?"
What comments are those? I read rot written by the GN experts on here and then question it. I usually refrain from giving opinions.
Lots of opinions there.
BTW There is no need to thank me for my comments. as I would NEVER thank you.
I would suggest if you don't wish to refrain from criticising and abusing other members for their shared thoughts you don't post at all. Its obvious you are not interested and don't care about your fellow members. You are only interested in creating discord and upset.

Gregs post as reference in my above post.
A great explanation Greg, thank you.

Regards
Rob
That makes sense (the immune system depletion). To be fair, I was exhausted and emotional when I got the flu jab this year, so may have had a mild reaction and not registered it as such. I was sleeping 18 hours a day those 2 weeks. And then I got home, headed back to work, no time to be tired...
Dick0: you have made four posts to this thread, each has been borderline abusive and sarcastic. Not one of them has added a single useful word to the discussion. If all you can do is snipe then better not to post.
What a bloody excellent post Rob.
I dont think I have heard anyone so passionate and say it as it is.
We most certainly need to all pull together otherwise we are all going to be in this mess forever.
Sorry to hear of the passing of your wifes cousin.
Take care mate
Stu
There you go again...patronizing the non back patters. It's obviously a side effect of the Vaccine. No abuse from my side, just responding to the group herd who dislike a different view.
www.wanttoknow.info/h/covid-19-vaccines-warning
I,d believe facebook before this garbage. Just more crap confusing people.....not even based on facts.
Wonder were the world would be if we banned the vaccine... there would be a few on here possibly pushing up daisies through no fault of their own.
Makes my blood boil that we have seen so many idiots come out and , caring only about their own needs, scare monger and behave disgracefully when if ever a time was needed for us to look out for each other..now is it.
