Hello all, first post , need advice on obtaining medication while travelling the great southern land.
I can get a script for six months, but what happens after that period? and is the script good in all states?
My wife and I both require medication.
Any information would be appreciated.

Can you get a letter or a copy of your health records from your current doctor outlining your medical condition and your need for a prescription so that another doctor can treat you and renew your prescription while you're travelling? 
I think pharmacies in all states would fill an up-to-date prescription from a doctor from another state.  However, I did meet someone on the road who found that they couldn't get their prescription filled in one of the more remote towns they visited, so it may be worth trying to plan your trip so that you can renew and fill your prescription in one of the bigger towns. 

We have letters from our GP and specialists and when we require more prescribed medication we visit a local GP and request what we need. To make matters easier we make copies of the doctors letters and leave a copy with the visited GP. This saves filling out a lot of information for the local GP. We have found no problems with this procedure. Kevin.

This is one of the things I was worried about, medication while travelling. What great ideas from speedy sue and ggypsies, it has taken a load off my mind.

I feel sure there is away around this situation... there is almost always a solution...as an example when we went on a brief holiday recently we organised for a district nurse to come to the caravan park and tend my husbands PICC line. Easy peasy.. we intend doing the same again, albeit for a brief holiday. Best of luck.

All Australian prescriptions are valid in all states and territories, provided they are current. NHS scripts are valid for 12 months, and most regular medications can have up to four repeats ordered. Most supplies are for one month, so make sure you get them dispensed again before running out. And don't forget to carry your Health Care Card/Pension Card if that applies.
In an emergency a pharmacist can supply a limited quantity of medication if you run out, sometimes this requires a phone call to your prescriber.

Hi all you ask your G.P to make the prescriptions regulation 24 this allows you to get your 6 month supply in one lot as some remote pharmacies wont have your medication perhaps, if you have to pay PBS prices this can also allow you to ask for a discount on the 6 month supply, you can only get the 6 month supply with a reg 24 and use the original prescription, hope this helps.
