We have all been through the Big Toy phase of buying or subscribing to monthly publications in the hope of improving our knowledge base on a particular subject. Some contain a mine of useful information while others are just a mine shaft in to which you shove $10 or more dollars of you hard to come by $'s per month .
While not in anyway supporting or endorsing one publication over another I have to say that in the last 12 months I have been buying Caravan & Motorhome on tour. Without doubt every month there is something worth while for the van or camper owner.
It may be how to wire a solar system or fit a second battery , reverse a trailer safely, where to get bits from or just tips on mods done by other owners plus heaps of travel sites and places to visit regardless it's all good stuff.
Anyone out there got any others they subscribe to that give free hints for the DIY in all of us and not just an abundance of glossy full paged adds for things we can't afford or want

I had a bit of a run in with a cuppla mags, they did the dirty on me. Asked me to contribute for a story they were doing which I did then they publish exactly to the word my work as one of their "staffers" work. NOT NICE. No appology nothing just some hubris about how it was a "generalised" article and my comments wern't specific enough to warrant a "byline".... yeah so sorry won't get caught again.

I know where your coming from have done a few articles for mags and jourals over the years and became aware very early that if you think you are going to have your voice heard on every article you write then think again . It's the old story "If it's a good idea then it belongs to the editor if it's crap then it's yours" , some you win some you lose.
I had my own back a number of times when I wrote technical articles regarding aircraft crash investigations and the editors took the story as their own, but when the article raised more technical questions from others he and she were really stuffed as they couldn't answer, they were obviously in over their heads so I let them sink with full military honors. Believe me my friend what goes around comes around.

yeah, alas you'd be hard put to find a no win no fee lawyer who would work on the case for you and it would cost an arm, leg and mango to defend yourself, they'ed offer you a settlement out of court and if you said no then your fees would eat up any profit. Trust me Dave, justice is expensive.... Do you see me in an ultralight yet re the matter I'm not allowed to discuss?

hmm! well I must admit I never came across a publication that didnt pay me so I cant comment on any negative outcome, I just ceased doing it or at least slowed right down because of the pathetic payment (well I thought it was pathetic anyway)

I think the problem is the Advertising. there IS NO ESCAPE, everywhere you look, go or watch advertising pervades, you can't even go to a public loo in Canberra with out being advised as to the best Condoms to use, The best treatment for piles, the best "germicidal" handwash.... Advertising is the oil of the machinery of capitalism but in some places it has got to the point where the magazines are just Ads and the articles in them seem to be recycled every few years.
I think that alot of the media magnates make their money from advertising and not the sale of their product.

Justice is dependent on what you pay or who you know. That's why she wear a blindfold until they see the colour of ya money.
Trying to prove intellectual property rights is always an uphill battle, I think they can us up to 80% of another s material before they are infringing your rights. Unbelievable how a cut and paste can give a story a whole new meaning a regular writer can recycle the same materail many times over using the cut and paste method .
If you are in doubt about getting it printed submit it minus enough technical detail if that's what the article is about and when having the editors accept it ask to have it back for correction and technical updating then you can finish it off .
