Have any of you or your family ever had quite unexpected and out of the ordinary things happen out of the blue? As an example, my 25 year old accountant daughter will soon be featured in Dove Beauty Products' next advertising campaign in the USA. This has come about as a result of her being spotted and approached by a casting agent while enjoying herself at a flea market in Los Angeles. Of the 60,000 hopefuls she was chosen to be one of 5 principal cast members for the campaign. From 12th April her image will be seen on television, magazines, internet and billboards (including Times Square, New York). In the meantime she continues to work as Senior Financial Analyst for Columbia Pictures. What unforeseen events have you and yours enjoyed? There must be a number of different examples. Lyn.

That is very exciting Lynnie. She must be a gorgeous looking girl. Do we get to see it over here or will it only be in USA?

She has inherited her looks from her late father - she does have a lovely smile. I imagine that the scout from the casting agency probably saw her smiling and laughing along with one of her girlfriends. To my knowledge, the television, magazine and billboard advertising will be confined to USA. We will be able to see her on the internet though. It was a case of her being in the right place at the right time, I guess.

What a change and a chance of a lifetime. I hope they paid her appropriately. That's about how they spotted the cast of Red Dog. They were in the Elizabeth Shopping Centre and someone decided they had the characteristics they were looking for. Then they had to teach them to act, but they now have careers. These opportunities are exciting, but it's a bit like winning the lottery.

Well, she was unable to be paid for it and receive any royalties as her Visa applies to her employer, Sony Pictures & Entertainment. That's the way the cookie crumbled, but it was the most amazing and new experience for her. Something different to put on her CV too. During our travels, we all enjoy/will enjoy amazing and new experiences. But in a more private manner, I guess.

Thats great for your daughter, congrats. Heres one for you. My son Michael was apparently living 3 doors away from the men who flew into the twin towers. Strange but true. You can imagine I had bloody kittens when I found that out.
And when I was ten back in gisborne nz, I used to play volley ball with the infamous Mr Asia, he was just a kid at that time, went on to bigger things.

What a thrill that must have been.
When I was about 17 working in a department store, I was asked to enter the Miss Australia competition. I was gob smacked! I said no, I don't really know why...fear of the unknown I guess.
Of course, I was a skinny little thing in those days.

Now we will never know what may have transpired Beth! It is interesting how some opportunities and experiences in liife can arise when you least expect them and from unexpected quarters. Have any of you had experiences during your travels that you would never have expected? Lyn

A house fire was the catalyst for a total change in my life. I was a single mum living in Streaky Bay in a house attached to the local bakery. While I was visiting friends in Ceduna for the weekend the baker caught fire and my house was extensively damaged. Many people volunteered to help me, and I was moved into a state house in Ceduna. Some people showed me the way to self-confidence. I acquired my bus licence and earned a few top-up $'s driving tourists to the OTC Station north of town, or to beaches nearby. Then the ABC was looking for a local correspondent to provide local news stories to the Pt. Lincoln office. I left Ceduna 4 years later to live in Pt. Lincoln where this developed into a one-woman industry incorporating journalism for radio and TV, a public relations and media consultancy. All because someone showed some faith in me and encouraged me to do it.

Funny thing is, what makes me more proud of her is not her many achievements. What makes me most proud of her is the person that she has become in spite of various adversities, etc. Like myself, she recognises that without some of the less than pleasant things that sometimes happen in our lives, we wouldn't be where we are today. Things generally happen for a reason, don't they. Lyn

Last year I visited Undarra Lava Tubes on my way to the Atherton Tablelands.
Grant Denyer was there filming and reporting the weather for Ch 7's Sunrise program. I met him, chatted to him and his crew and got to be on TV!
My girlfriend on the Tablelands was watching and said she suddenly saw me, and stood in front of the TV waving at me...'I can see you Beth!'
Makes for a good travel story!

My life has had many unexpected turns Lynnie .. far too many to expose here for the masses .. but they've all been part of what has got me to this point in time in my life.
I'd met John Farnham before the days of "Sadie" .. Sat on the same bench stool with her when Winifred Atwell entertained a few personal friends at home ..
.. but my own happiness and contentment stems from my (2) boys .. After losing their Mother some 8 years ago, they've now settled down into their own separate lifestyles, both now married and both happy in life ..
.. My 2nd son was married last Saturday and is now out of the country for a short while with his wife .. he had recently been out there as well searching for the bush bunny "Malcolm" who has now been captured ..
We could chat about being raised in a fairly strict religious atmosphere and the changes that made me choose to enjoy a spiritual outlook at life rather than a religious one, but we won't .. hehe !
.. Experiencing the vast difference in cultures .. of growing up in New Guinea and also sharing an early part of my life at Hermannsburg in Central Australia .. 120 k's west of the "Alice" ..
Life's experiences, whether good or bad, are what got us all to this point in time .. and now its just great to share it together .. we all have our own pasts, but its nice to share this present time together.
