Also Tommo, if you remove the bolt just above where you have put yours, it can be replaced with a marine eye bolt instead, have to get the same size thread though and when I did mine years ago needed to cut a bit off the bolt to make it shorter.
Your type of awning arm is ok for that (was the same as mine) however there is another type that to remove a bolt it would release the spring inside the roll out awning, so only certain type of awning.
You've done a good job on yours with your method.

Thanks Vic thats an idea I never thought of I will put that one in place when I get my new van next month. I have just perched a Belmont by concept. Not sure what awning that has but your idea seems the way to go

Just looked at this post and was wondering what the bracket is called and where to buy it.

It's called a Pad Eye and you can get them from boat chandleries, boating places like Whitworths, BCF I think carries them and possibly even places like Bunnings or Masters.

Thanks for that. I'll try Bunnings as a start

Another cheaper and far less invasive idea that was given to me on my travels was to buy two cat collars and attach them to each end of the awning roller (make sure not to inhibit the awning cover) and you can use this to attach your guy rope too. It works a treat and puts even tension on the awning. I think it cost me about $7 or $8.

I think that what ever I decide to go with it needs to be quick release in case if the wind gets up and I need to roll up awning in a hurry. I have heard of people losing awnings being ripped off due to high winds, gust etc so that is driving my thinking at the moment.

For maximum benefit, leave the cats attached to the collars too
