But of course on the roof is the most convenient - fit and forget

I bought six 20 watt Projecta panels to make a foldable set to fit a space on the roof as none of the off the shelf sets fitted the space I had.

Carry my 3 panel folding in the tub.(in the black bag) Have a small trolley to run them in and out.
I asked the same question a while back Mrs FR, got varying answers, but the best place I found is at the side of the bed, sort of leaning against the wall and bed.
Some said against the cafe seating but mine didn't fit there, it's a bit of musical chairs when it gets dark, sometimes I put them in the car leaning against the back seat, or in the shower till morning.
They are definitely worth carrying on longer trips, but not sure about small trips.
Good luck.....Bob

I carry a 160w (2x80w) folding panel in the protective carry case and upright against the rear seat back. There is always something bulky but soft in front of it and it's belted in. It easily slides out to use and back in to travel.

P!$$ed off my 220W folding panels with MPPT on Facebook marketplace and bought a 200W blanket version instead from 4WDSupacentre.
Cheaper $$ now, lighter, very compact, and actually has a better output in full sun.
A big plus with the blankets is you can spread them across the bonnet or roof of you tug easily with damaging paintwork.
The safest place would be on the bed, under the quilt/blanket
Unfortunately you will have to remove it, each night
I do not have a caravan, but hope that you find a good spot for it
Came across a gent, who had his portable solar panel, as the last item to go inside his canopy
This was the first item he removed, and if not using it, he would just place it under his caravan, for the day, while in the free camp
