i have a 2018 Dmax pulling a Kingdom Kensington 1860 T, for the next longer trip Im thinking of changing to a 2nd hand Cruiser,
Thoughts are,
1st Dmax (2014) cracked head at 70000km ,fully serviced above and beyond. The failure is always in the back of my mind, yes I did but another one.Fuel economy is fantastic without van reasonable with.
isuzu not interested in warranty .
LC , I have had a 60 ser and 80 ser a long , long time ago bothe sold with 300 k plus never let me down.
What are the V8 LC doing per litre with a similar weighted van and how is the general feel out there for common rail / injector problems and so on.
any one selling a good one.

Hi Rhys....DMax and V8 Cruiser are chalk and cheese.Whilst the DMax is certainly one of the better lightweights, the Cruiser is a different vehicle altogether. When I bought mine, one of the first things I did was to fit another fuel filter BEFORE the factory filter, and I then got a tune done by a reputable Diesel Tuner......huge increase in power, torque and fuel economy. There are many thousands of these lightly stressed V8s towing much bigger loads than you have, with no problem.Where in Australia are you based? Cheers.

Hi Rasty.
I can't comment on Dmax v LC as I have never owned a Dmax.
But; re fuel, my van, duel axle, 8 mtrs total length and is 2500KG loaded.
I use cruise control most times and sit on 100km`s/hr. (when possible)
I only us BP fuel, and my fuel consumption on average is 16.4ltrs/100km`s. Ideal conditions.
Hope this helps in your decision making.
However a BIG plus for the LC is comfort.
Regards.

Hi,
Hetho, what are you driving please?
I have just today sold my 2012 Dmax to a friend at work....now have the same type of desicion to make.
I have had absolutely nil problems with two Dmax Dual cabs over 10 years but time for a change and I prefer Wagons.
Either a 200 series, Nissan Patrol, 76 series, 79 series dual cab or a new model Dmax(out in April/May). At the moment leaning towards the Nissan as no DPF filters or worry regards diesel fuel quality but I have not quite got to the point whereby i'm going to buy one. I do know will cost more for fuel but offset by cheaper servicing.
The Toyota's are very pricey for what you get due to being stand alone in the market place in my opinion but I do like the 200 series.
I like the Jeep Grand Cherokee but the uncertainty regarding reliability and part supply would cause me to not to buy one.
What to do....
Cheers AL

Hi Al.
Im in a 2013, 200 Series Landcruiser, GXL, 4.5 ltr twin turbo V8, Diesel. 210000kms. Purchased new with an employee (not Toyota) discount of 30%.
It was too good of a bargain to refuse.
The only issue has been the front brake rotors which develop heat spots quite quickly. Im trying softer pads now to see if that will help.
But very comfortable and heaps of room. I normally run with the 3rd row of seats out.
Regards.
Hetho.

Hi Alan....the car you choose may well be dictated by the van you tow,but if you had a DMax,it can be assumed that your van has an ATM no more than about 3000kg? The 200 has a rear axle capacity of only 1950kg,and tares heavy,so that is something to watch.Apart from using fuel like it is going out of fashion, the Y62 also has limited towing ability,as GVM drops to 3370kg with 350kg towball weight, and 3430kg with 300kg TBM.Maximum weight on wheels, with absolutely perfect axle loadings,is only 6520kg.....light years away from advertised 7000kg.The LC76 also has GVM of 3060kg. As always,79 series is in a class of its own, with 2300kg rear axle capacity, which means you can load the car up so always it is much heavier than the van,and much safer. My neighbour recently used his Y62 to go to Cameron corner etc,and when he returned he had to consider selling his house to pay the fuel costs on his credit card.....and he was towing only a camper trailer! Good luck with your choice.Cheers
P.S "Toyotas are pricey"?...one of the first lessons in life is that you get what you pay for.Just saying.

Hi,
Thanks Hetho.
Yobarr, The caravan I tow is in my avatar, a 2008 21 ft Windsor Genesis. It is about 2.6 t loaded for a trip. Eventually that will be changed as well though.
My 2012 Dmax has done it quite well only real issue is a rather tall first gear which gives the clutch a workout on hill starts. I try to avoid them.
Yes the 79 series is possibly the most tow worthy of my selection but not a favorite of she who must be thought about.....
From what I have read and talked to owners about the Y62 series 3 and 4 are only a whisker more thirsty than the 200 series when towing...maybe a litre or two per 100 kms.
Around the town and no load, for sure the Cruiser is more economical.
Sorry if I have hijacked the thread but it is fairly relevant to the original post.
Back to putting the thinking cap on...
Cheers AL

All good Al....any of the cars you have selected will comfortably tow up to about 3000kg ATM,but after that, the only suitable options are the Y62 and the 79.In view of the your wifes apparent aversion to the 79,which may lack some of the preferred but unimportant "luxury" items,it seems that your choice is limited to the Y62.Good car,but not my kettle of fish.Good luck with whatever you choose! Hi Rasty,
When I brought my first 80 series LC, I asked the salesman what it was like on juice? He said if you can afford a Cruiser, you don't worry about fuel !! Back in those days fuel was cheap, now I'm on my fourth LC.
I have a 2015 LC 200, 4.5 V8 TD done 80 k and is a joy to tow with. Usually get around 18 -19 LPH, doing 100kph on cruise control also, it has been as bad as 23 - 24 LPH with terrible headwinds etc but a comfortable ride that always feels very stable and strong. I tow 3200 kg.

Over rated and talked about indeed! Perhaps can you explain why Toyota can't keep up with demand, and there is a 6 month waiting list to buy a 79? The Cruisers seem to retain their value too,as evidenced by the high prices realised in the second hand market.I seem to recall that the OP already has a DMax,is unhappy, and seeks a superior vehicle? Tony opined that "....you get what you can afford",which undoubtedly is true, but I would suggest that a second hand Cruiser would be a safer bet than a new lightweight? Cheers.

To me (predjuiced) the LC200 is great, but even given your lightweight van, be careful of creating a " FAT " cruiser. easy to go over gvm on cruiser with all the good stuff, once you add tow ball weight. We get between 17 sometimes to 18-20 l/100 towing around 2100k pop top. Try to keep around 95-100 indicated.

I wasn't going to join in on this topic as you asked about Toyota or Dmax but hey, me being me I couldn't help myself sorry.
I am a very happy Colorado driver and it copes very well with towing 2.7t. The Collie is loaded 24/7 as I am full time on the road.
I can't see why the Dmax wouldn't do what you want. Maybe consider putting a tray on back with aluminium canopy (Shed), that way things are easy as to get in and out. I went with a genuine Holden Canopy but regret it now and too costly to change.
Another thing to think of is, with the Shed on the back you have your 'Man Shed' with you at all times.
Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

As a footnote to my post, a Y62 Nissan Patrol has been brought to replace my Dmax.
I must say I never had any white knuckle towing issues with my van on the road towing with the Dmax, did the job well.....but I think any caravan much bigger would have been asking for trouble weight wise van vs tow unit if an emergency situation arose.
Overall two Isuzu Dmax dual cabs over 10 years plus and not one problem is a good/unusual thing to be able to report.
Just waiting now to get the Patrol. Hopefully as trouble free as well.
