HI to all. I will be traveling to Bairnsdale in Victoria next April for a Vietnam Reunion and want to avoid going through Melbourne if I can help it. On my last trip down that way ,I went the coast way down N.S.W and via Lakes Enterance. I want to ask if anyone one has towed a caravan ( 21 ft offroad) over the Omeo highway, If it is feasible, it would cut out a fair distance. Regards to all, Rip KIrby

Cannot comment on Omeo Highway.
I drive to Stratford-Maffra at least once a year via Canberra, Cooma, Cann River on the Monaro Highway and then the Princes Highway via Bairnsdale.
And I have towed my 18 foot caravan a couple of times with no problems.

Omeo highway not really suitable for towing caravans, very steep and windy which makes it a magnet for motorcycle groups - (invariably coming at you on wrong side of road). No mobile phone coverage on most of it's length. Another hazard is logging trucks at times.

Welcome to the gang ripkirby, enjoy here and out in the playground.
Knowing where you would be coming from would be handy but as you seem to be coming form north of the VIC boarder why not head down the Hume to Benalla then hang a left onto the B300 down to Yea then Yarra Glen then to Woori Yallock then down through Coc katoo down to Pakenham and the Princes hwy, hang another left and onward to Bairnsdale. A good run all the way. I have towed my 20ft aluminium tent that way twice without a problem.
There is a railway bridge at Yea you have to go under but is a tad over 3mts so no drama. If it is there is a truck detour anyway. I actually take the detour.
The other thing I have done, to get south of Melbourne on a couple of occasions was go through the freeway system before 6.00am. Works well and beats the bulk of heavy traffic.
Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

We travel over the Omeo Hwy 3 to 4 times a year,we live near Bairnsdale so it is the quickest way to N.E. Victoria.
We just went over last month to Tumut and came back over the Snowy Mountain Hwy. via Cooma, Dalgety-Bombala -Cann River.
It is a great trip over the Omeo Hwy. so much to see,so many lovely places to stay. All free on mountain streams and rivers.
You can easily spend 5 to 10 days or more. Yes it is winding and slow going in places, but it is well worth it.
Is it hard,No just drive to the conditions,we are pushing close to 80 yrs. and have no issues, will post photos of the Omeo Hwy. and places to stay and things to see.

Agree this is an excellent way to skirt the city. But the low rail bridge is at Seymour,

Ooops, sorry Wendy, you are correct.
Sorry ripkirby, a bit of a bum steer there. You go through Seymour as well so take care anyway. You can also keep on the Hume and hang a left at Seymour.
I would like to think my slip up was a 'Senior' moment and not 'Uncle Al' taking over.

Always try to stay out of cities if at all possible. Live near Adelaide so traffic not too bad and no tolls.
Did some work earlier in the year at Bunyip with blazeaid that meant I had to travel from one side of Melbourne to the other on a couple of occasions.
With my wife helping on the navigation it was fine, but one trip back, very early in the morning, got completely lost (even using the GPS), and I think I finished up on a toll road. When I got home tried to find out where I had been, but no luck. Contacted some Linkt thing and they said to buy a day pass at some stupid cost. Signed up for auto billing with Linkt and never got a bill.
BONUS
Will usually travel hundreds of k's if necessary to avoid going through a city.

we often do lakes Entrance, Cann River, Bombala, Cooma, Canberra - an easy drive towing our 23 ft van. Have done the other route via Omeo in just the car and would not consider towing the van that way

I think what Dougwe is saying is that there are a couple of options for getting to Yea: 1. Down the Hume to Seymour then east to Yea. Follow the truck route through Seymour if not sure about the 3.2m rail bridge. 2. Turn off the Hume at Benalla and come south that way to Yea.
From Yea go to Yarra Glen, Woori Yallock, ****atoo, Pakenham.

If coming from Benalla your No.2 route along the Midland highway then down to Yea would be the better option IMO,
much quieter and more scenic drive as well,
Seymour is too far out of the way considering the final destination and you also avoid the narrow, windy section of the Goulburn Valley ( GV ) from the Trawool bridge down to the King Parrot Creek,
Some folk aren't always fussed about keeping to their side of the road around there,

Thanks Wendy, that's exactly what I was trying to say.
Mariner, I found 'Uncle Al' sitting outside not longer after I posted my first comment so the bugga did get up first yesterday.
I beat him today though and I tell you that for free.
Some where along the road form Seymour to Yarra Glen, I can't remember exactly where, there is a easy to get into and out of servo that's good to top up the tank to keep ya going till Pakenham.
Enjoy the trip RK.
Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Route 2 is the way to go, and a lovely drive. Don't need to go as far as Seymour.

Dougwe - and others interested - that servo is at Glenburn.
Before we relocated, last year, we always stopped there to fill the Coaster with diesel - super easy to get into.

I find GPS tends to send you via cities . I check on map. Then plot the towns around cities .
