Can anyone give me an update on the condition of the above? We travelled on it a couple of years ago and found the road surface very undulating. It was not a pleasure to drive on.

A section of the Gore Highway south west of Millmerran has been closed because of a raging bushfire which is forcing people to leave their homes.
Residents in the rural Queensland towns of Forrest Ridge, between Toowoomba and Goondiwindi, have been told to seek shelter.
In nearby Cypress Gardens they are being told to leave immediately.
A bushfire is fast approaching properties forcing firefighters to urge residents to leave and head north east to the town of Millmerran.
However the highway between the BP service station at Captains Mountain through to Cypress Garden is closed to all traffic.
An alert issued by the Queensland Rural Fire Service states the fire is expected to have a significant impact on the community.
As of 4.10pm, there were 22 fire crews attempting to control the blaze, with another two heading to the scene.
An evacuation centre has been opened at Millmerran Community Cultural Centre, 42 Walpole Street, Millmerran.
In Carneys Creek, west of the Millmerran fire, people are being told to get ready to leave.
A large slow-moving blaze there is travelling in a north-westerly direction from Mount Barney National Park towards Carneys Creek Road and Hardcastle Road.
Crews on the ground are being assisted by water bombing aircraft to tackle that fire.

Thanks for the info. It will be approx 2-3 weeks before we are in the area. At present we are in Tassie and heading back to the mainland on Wednesday, then heading for Qld.

The Gore Highway is now open after the fires. A friend drove it last week and told me that the road surface was rough.

I think that you are right on.
It's been like that for generations. I remember it when lots of sections were unsealed (you wouldn't want to know how long ago that was). That was in the era when we used to get lots of rain. During the wet the bottoms of all the dips were full of water & a few inches of mud. If you got off the crest of the road you were in deep S#$@ sorry black mud.
Having said that unless you want to tear along at 100 clicks a few (hundred/thousand) ups & downs shouldn't be a problem. I would expect a fair amount of broken up or badly repaired surface.
Sorry I can't add any up to date info. Phillipn's advice might be worth taking notice of.

Everyone (up our way) seems to think that the Bruce Highway is woeful. Yes there are a lot of fatalities on it. I can only put that down to stupidity, judging what we saw a few days ago.
BUT I wonder whether these people have ever travelled on the Gore? It has always been rough & will be that way for quite some time until the govt puts a decent bed on the road. They patch up the patches, a heavy vehicle (& there are plenty) just breaks it up. The last time I was on it was earlier this year. I'd like to think it has improved but I'm not holding my breath.
