Just like to wish everybody a safe, happy and prosperous new year.At the end of 2020 we can all prepare to welcome the beginning of a new decade,as this decade does not end until midnight on December 31st,2020.If anybody disagrees, just ask yourself how many runs does a cricketer need to complete to be credited with scoring a century? A century has not been scored until the end of the hundredth run,not the beginning of that run,or year.Cheers
P.S There never was a year "0.

In actual fact, the end of this year is the end of a decade. Perhaps not as portrayed by the media use of the term, or in the working of age, but certainly when one considers what a decade is.
A decade being considered a period of 10 years, the end of this year marks the end of the 10 year period from 01/01/2010 to 31/12/2019.
May not be what the media means when it says decade, but any year is in fact the end of a decade being the 10 year period immediately prior.
Just a thought to ponder at this moment in time. Here is one definition from the internet that does back up the media usage as well.
B2 a period of ten years, especially a period such as 2010 to 2019
Happy New Year and Happy New decade to you all!

Absolutely right The Heaths. There are various schools of thought as to when the next decade begins. The millenium commenced on 1st January 2000 so bearing that in mind the ten year period finishes at midnight on December 31st 2009. The next decade then begins and finishes on...wait for it..December 31st 2019. If something happened during 1970 then people refer to it as a happening in the seventies. Likewise, if something happens during 2020 it will be referred to as something that happened in the twenties.
I guess it is just up to one's own interpretation and not that important. Happy New Year.

A decade is a period of ten years and the last year of an ordinal decade ends in a number containing a 'zero'.If anyone needs help to understand this, they might like to write down all the numerals from one to ten,and it will soon become apparent that the tenth number they have written has a 'zero' in it? I am well aware that any ten year period can be referred to as a decade, but I must again point out that the 202nd decade will not conclude until end of 2020.Sad,boring,inconvenient truth. Referrals to '70s' and '80s' etc are nothing but red herrings thrown in by people who seem unable to count. To help these people to understand,I again will ask them to consider how many runs a batsman needs to complete to be credited with scoring a century? He does not reach his century at the end of his 99th run.Similarly, the 202nd decade will not be over until the end of 2020. Cheers

It is not a matter of whether people can count or people scoring centuries in cricket, there is a variance in opinion as to whether one is using a Gregorian calander or constructing from AD.
Just because you have a view does not mean it must be correct. I think you will find there are two competing and equally valid views or are you a pantomath.

No help needed Yobarr. Quite simple really. Youre incorrect regarding this, and all the bold words, or attempts at belittling comments do not alter the fact that the decade (10 year period) from 01/01/2010 to 31/12/2019 finished yesterday at midnight. That is really the inconvenient truth! Perhaps if you had made it clear that you were discussing an ORDINAL decade at the start, it may have been different.
That said, enjoy the new year and non ordinal decade (also known as a CARDINAL decade according to Wikipedia).

You are correct The Heaths. If one looks at the calculations from AD, then the year 1 does not commence until after the commencement of year 2. One cannot have AD in advance, a year had to pass.
In Year 2 AD, it was known as Year 1 so by the time Year 9 AD rolled around the decade was up on 31st December, Year 9 as 10 years had passed.
Having said all this, there still remains two views with both sides claiming they are right.
Happy New Year.

Yep, definitely two schools of thought out there.
Not gonna argue which is right or wrong, but I think I tend to agree with the ops point of view on this one.
For some reason it all reminds me of the daylight savings disputes :)
Happy New Year.
