Just wondering if anyone has any experience towing a 3030 GVM van Jayco silver line with a late model Isuzu d max 3 L diesel dual cab Ute? Is this vehicle a reasonable towing vehicle or Will it be hard work?

I am sure Yobarr will let you know if it is legal or not they develop 430 nm of torque which is down a bit on some other utes but they have a strong following and i am sure they are a reliable unit

Its really scary you know, Yobar's going to jump out of the shadows and then we're for it! but the main figure as far as I am concerned is the "gross combined mass" of both rigs, no matter where the weight is or what mods you have done (arguments about that), you cannot go over the combined mass. So if the GCM is 6000kg and your tug weighs 3000kg loaded, then the van can't weigh more than 3000kg. The reason I asked the size is that we have the 24ft model, and you can fit so much in it, the weight goes through the roof. The 21ft model may be a tad bit easier to manage. When you get the GCM under control, then you can worry about the rest. I can feel it Yobar's reading this-------- running --------

Welcome to the gang Preston, enjoy here and out in the playground.
Me, I am full time GN and have a Colorado twin cab ute, so very similar to the Dmax. I tow 2.7t. No WDB. Everything nice and level.
I have been pulled over by the Scalies twice now and both times, combined, Collie, aluminium teepee and tow ball weights have all been under. D Shackles correct. Chains correct. Tow mirrors (clearviews) all correct. I am legal and safe. That is all I am concerned with and don't take notice of 'experts'. If the Authorities are happy, so am I.
Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

Only as a DOG trailer,if safety is of ANY concern. If you hook up 3500kg ATM van, with the generally accepted 10% towball weight, you would have 3150kg GTM,leaving only 2800kg for the car before you reach your GCM of 5950kg.....and you will NEVER get 2800kg onto the car as 350kg TBM takes around 150kg off the front axle, and transfers it to the rear axle. That weight can NEVER be returned with a WDH without going over the van's ATM.Car rear axle is only 1870kg,so very quickly overloaded, making your car unsafe and illegal......and with the van being over 12% heavier than the car,we would have an accident looking for a place to happen.Later.Cheers

Whew, that was close!, anyway the D-max has a GCW of 5950kg. Van empty (- that's without additions like , extra battery solar panel etc) 2575kg. What's the ute weigh with all of you inside, plus the dog, toys, bikes etc. add them together, and that's what you have to work with.
To answer your original question, I tow with a BT50 and it is hard work. Have you checked out the Jayco Journey's, better not to have to worry about weights.

Thanks for your comments but I think you might of missed the point to my original question. That was has anyone had any experience towing a silver line with the D max Ute ?. I never ever intended to tow 3500 kg with that Ute . My vans GVM is 3030 kg . I was hoping to tow this silver line with the fully loaded unhitched weight of of van at just under 2950 Kg.tow ball weight 280 kg. My tow vehicles Gvm including tow ball weight would be approximately 2900 Kg. I know this is not ideal but do you think This car could tow this van safely with these figures ?

Work with the vans ATM. That's the max allowed on each van. If it is under 3t the Dmax should cope. Just. All the similar utes are not really suited to the 3.5t the manufacturers say they can.
I went with the Collie because they reckon 3.5t but I was only going to ever tow less than 3t so my 2.7t is well under.
I am pretty sure the Dmax has same details so if your van is on or under 3t ATM all should be good.
I think that answers your question.
I am no expert and only go by what I do.

As Doug suggests, the DMax will tow 3 ton no worries, and your weights are good. With 10% towball weight, your van would have 2670kg weight on van wheels, while,at 2900kg,your car's weight on wheels would be be around 9% greater than the van. The DMax is one of the better twin-cabs,and will easily handle your 3 ton van. Cheers

Lots of D Max's out there towing similar vans and all the owners I have spoken to are very happy with them.
Nearly bought one myself but found the front seats lacked support for me under my legs so bought the Ranger but that is just a personal thing and not a reflection on the vehicle as a whole.

Our configuration is exactly as in the OP original question.
We have a 2017 Isuzu D-Max 3L 6 speed auto and tow a 21' 21-65-3 Jayco Silverline.
I am more than happy with the ability of the D-Max, in fact this is our 2nd one. Previously had a 2015 model but updated with a desire to use the 6 speed auto.
Like most utes, the suspension was a bit 'hows your mother' but this was remedied with a GVM/GCM upgrade by Lovels. The car now has a GVM of 3500kg and GCM of 7000kg.
I have no intention of loading to these maximums but we were running close to the bone with standard configuration as I have done many mods to the caravan.
The car tows the van admirably, it is not a racing car and I don't expect it to perform as such but with it's light truck engine it pulls the van effortlessly at 100kmh (gps speed) on the highway with a fuel consumption around 15L/100 km all day any day.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me.
Cheers Neil

Much appreciated,Thank you very much everybody for their replies and ideas .has been a great help.
Hi ,
My experiences with my 2012 manual Dmax and 21ft van pretty much echo Neils thoughts and information provided.
I will say that I will soon be going bigger re van so have replaced the Dmax with a Nissan patrol Y62.
If anybody wants a good Dmaxits for sale.
