I have just had the ATM upgraded on my van and if you looking to do the same and you live within striking distance of Maryborough Qld I can recommend Transmod.
My van is a 2008 Supreme Spirit 18' dual axle. The original ATM was 2173kg as stated on the compliance plate and it has now been increased to 2500kg. This is the maximum allowed on this van without modifications (chains, tow hitch) . During the inspection a number of cracks in chassis welds were discovered. The van has covered 77,000km. A local welder repaired the cracks. So I guess it was fortunate that these were discovered before they caused a problem. Total cost for the upgrade was $450, plus the welding. After the final inspection a new compliance plate was fitted, I received a Certificate of Modification, filled out an application form and presented all to the Hervey Bay TMR and bingo I am legal to 2500kg.
All up a very simple process.
The reason for the upgrade is that dumb me believed the original compliance plate until I recently ran it over the scales and discovered it was quite a bit over, something I should have done years ago.
If anybody is interested in doing the same contact

Good price.
Not all ATM upgrades will be as simple or cheap.
Once you exceed certain weight limitations then things like axles and brakes or both need to be upgraded to a larger size.
I looked at possibly an upgrade to mine but I am right on the limit now for the current axles and brakes, so even doing the work myself, the parts alone were in the region of $2000.
The chassis is ok as it is rated about 350 Kg more than the current ATM.

Had mine done by a bloke in maryborough that comes to you. Same deal take it to the chassis / axle rating , went from 2450 to 2900 . Cost $150 with new plate fitted , even filled out all the transport department paperwork for me while he was there . Just went to transport office and handed it in all good .

Did you also advise your insurance companies?
When I had our last Patrol upgraded, the RACQ Insurance said the car was worth more with the additional weight capability.
Just a thought - this info should be added to the Recommendations page - easier to find in the future.
