The ubiquitous E-bay diesel heaters: how long does a 10L tank of diesel last in a Victorian winter? (In Rutherglen, if you like :) )
Just trying to get a sense of how much diesel I need to carry for remote camping in winter.

From memory I think the book says about .3 of a litre per hr. once warmed up and running. They warm things so well that we find that it is best to turn it off after a bit because it can get too warm pretty easy. They are a well proven and a great addition to a van.

Hi Mike....as Kerry says, about .3 of a litre per hour.Mine does hot water too,and it gives plenty of hot water about 20 minutes after being turned on. Wouldnt be without it,although I do use the split system until temperatures really drop.Cheers

Hi Mike
Depends on several factors, how much insulation, size of heater, how long you have it going.
As a general rule our 3kw unit in ur 16ft van with 36mm insulation uses 10L over 2 weeks but we never need it on for more than 2 hours. this 5L fuel can would be our back up if we get low. they are for motorcycles and you can get brackets that you use to lock them up
The 2kw heaters if suitable are smaller in actual size and the most economical . A larger 5KW unit if used in an overkill situation will be too hot for smaller caravans and use more fuel. We could have got away with a 2KW unit.

It depends on the temperature that you set. In winter we used to put it on 16 degrees overnight and turn it off at about 10 am. We found that it would use between 1 and 2 liters. The cost of keeping the van warm overnight was usually about $2.00. They are great.

Keep heading north Mike (as shown in your earlier query, "Where to go?") - you won't need one, LOL!
Yes you might need a jumper & a blanket but we only get cold when we head down your way!

I may end up in western Qld during winter this year so I thought I'd have a look at the cost of Diesel Heaters.
I came across this amazing offer on eBay .. Just a COVER for a heater at a steal of $500!!!!
I saw our local Jayco dealer yesterday selling them, fitted and guaranteed for $995.00. Looked good!

Many thanks people. Sounds like the standard 10L tank plus a 10L backup will keep me going for at least a couple of weeks.
Warren: good advice mate :)

Hi mike how big is your van ? Dont be fooled into getting a 5 kw unless you have a really big van 2.5 kw will produce heaps of heat pluss running a 5 at low will stand a good chance of fouling up with carbon .
Big isnt always better .

We get around 11 hours/litre for a 2 kw unit in 20 ft van. Would not need a larger unit.

Often see ludicrous prices like this on eBay, some bunnies obviously fall for it.
