Last Saturday 11:30 am 22/02/2020 I was traveling west along the Gatton bypass on the speed limit [100 kph]and I was overtaken by two idiots in 4x4`s towing caravans. I have it on dash cam and I estimate they were doing at least 110 - 115 kph.
If these people are on this forum, you are bloody idiots.

Where it is safe to do so, I normally travel at 100kph. Aside from the fact that I believe that that is the maximum safe speed you can do with a large van in tow, it is also the speed limit in some States, including my home State of WA, for towing vans or trailers of any sort.
And yet I often get passed by people travelling well above that speed towing something.
Governments are constantly carrying on about speed. Speed isn't the problem. It's the boofhead behind the wheel that's the issue. In motorsport we call them the Spacer. The bit that fills the space between the wheel and the seat. Race engineers generally don't like the Spacers as they are inclined to throw the brain out the window and wreck the car. There is an awful lot of Spacers on our roads.

Its an interesting point, I too get passed by ------- idiots, but I sort of believe that the guys are not out to see the country, but only to get from point A to point B, then to point B to point C, etc., I say that because driving I see very little of the country, I have to concentrate on the job in hand, so these fellows see absolutely nothing. It is a pleasure to be a passenger, the view is entirely different to that from the drivers view.

The Gatton Bypass is about 20km in length. There are three bends making 4 legs of 5km. Most would consider it a safe road to overtake when nothing is coming the other way. Some people have an issue with towing speeds, some don't.

G'day fellas
Mid 2019 we did the Oodnadatta Track - in the MH. Those who have done it will know that it is a gravel road of varying quality along its length. We also lowered tyres by 1/3 and speed accordingly, meaning cruising in the 60-75km/h range depending upon road surface. At one time our 2-way came to life with a truckie's expletive filled voice about someone called Bluddy Richard Head who was hitting the ton along the same road. I called up the truckie and he politely but with anger in his voice mentioned that these 2 eejets screamed past his stopped truck while he was walking around checking the tyres. He also gave his position to a landmark - and I recognised that we had passed it about 12-15km behind us.
Just then these 2 vehicles screamed past my MH, their speed looked like I was at walking speed ~ so if they were any less than 110km/h I would be very surprised
We passed them a sometime later - they had stopped for a liquid exchange - in and out at the same time - and I wondered as to 'why the hell of a rush if they had only gained 50km in the meantime'

The Gatton bypass is duel lane highway both ways. If you wish to speed and you get booked you will be paying the fine, not me. I hope your stupid driving does not cause an accident.
A bit further along the bypass their was a car that had crashed only minutes before we got to it.

Phillipn. Do you condemn everyone who thinks differently to you and embellish you inner thoughts before committing them to writing ? Just where did you read I exceed posted speed limits anywhere let alone the Gatton Bypass ? I certainly didn't write it so I guess its those embellished inner thoughts I mention. FWIW It's legal to overtake on the Gatton Bypass. You claim to know the speed these overtaking vehicles were doing at the time but refused the chance to to offer up any dashcam footage. I'm not suggesting you are telling porkies but let's face it, you can't interpret much correctly can you ? Mate, it's time to get a life and stop trying to live everyone else's lives.

On occassions when overtaking a road train or a group of cars, I have had the car and van upto +130kph. My intention is to get past them as quickly as possible whilst I am on the "wrong" side of the road. As I have Ozi explorer I know exactly my speed, not what the speedo says. In most cases the speedo is about 9kph under at 100kph with the std tyres on. My car has all the electronic aids for towing and I have never felt it unsafe or sway etc when overtaking. And in general I stick to the posted speed limit, bearing in mind all the road and weather conditions. This idea you have to travel slower because you are towing, depends on what you are towing, what weight it is and what you are towing with.

Hi,
I read the comment made by Neil (Delta18) as humorous, not an attempt to reduce the importance of road safety.
I know a few people whom I could relate his comment to in real life.
Road safety is important to myself as well but perhaps before becoming a keyboard worrier perhaps consider the context in which the post was made.

HandyWalter- Unless the speed limit was 130kph towing you are simply breaking the law.
Your judgement before overtaking should be based on not exceeding the limit while overtaking, not taking your rig up to 130kph to minimalism the time on the wrong side of the toad. Your theory has merit but is illegal.
Once had a Jaguar, while overtaking a semi I dotted a car coming the other way, so floored the cats accelerator... got booked by the cop that was the approaching car. He told me my judgement prior to overtaking was flawed and was the catalyst for the situation

Has not yet and with my road, race and rally experience, plus a car designed to tow 3.5t, with proper electronics designed to assist towing, not after market add ons, (not that I tow that weight), I think I have most things covered. I only have to worry about others, doing something stupid, on the road, just like I had to do when I raced cars.Yes I know exceeding the speed limit is against the law, but when you are stuck behind grey nomads doodling along at 80kph in convoys with no space between vehicles, you sometimes have to bite the bullet and take an opportunity when it presents itself. And yes I know the speed I travel does not make much difference in arrival time, from the snails. However i like to travel at a pace that I feel comfortable with, and that is in general within the laws of the land. Hence if I want to travel at 100kph and you want to travel at 90pkh and I am not to exceed the speed limit I need a long distance of visible road for the wind up and the overtaking. Hence the extra speed to get past. I use courtesy if someone catches up to me regardless of whether they are speeding or not and pull over or indicate they can pass and slow down. Many people seem to think that because they are traveling at the speed limit (note most speedos are 10% faster than actual) they refuse to let faster vehicles pass. Never been caught for speeding yet and I live in the Nanny state.

The op was probably *safely* doing 80kmh on a 110kmh road and guessed the overtakers speed.
Honestly, I thought the red flag brigade disbanded in 1895.
Set your vans up for safety people.

dabbler, No I don`t condemn everyone, only those that post stupid comments and change the facts to suit their agenda. Yes it is legal to pass on the bypass within the speed limit. What I read from your post was that you have no problem with excess speed.
Yes, I have a life, and and I don`t want to lose it or see anyone else lose theirs.
As I posted the vans were out of sight in a short time, in case you missed what I wrote I was doing 100 kph gps speed. So if they were not in excess of the limit. this post would not exist.

1. The OP stated the Gatton bypass is a 100kph limit. 100kph doesn't mean 110kph. Just because you haven't been nicked for speeding yet doesn't mean you won't be in the future, assuming you manage to remain in one piece in the meantime.
2. I too have rallying experience. I also have a car/van each full of every conceivable bit of electronic safety gear, but I'm not silly enough to think it provides a force field around me enabling me to purposely push the boundaries.
