Good idea. Now we just need consistent road rules around the country.

Excellent idea!
Especially for roads where the number of overtaking lanes are limited.
I could name a few in Northern Qld.
I'll send it to our three state (non-responsive) MPs. The last one I sent was a suggestion of standardizing the laws in NSW, Vic & SA of overtaking stationary emergency vehicles. I got a written response. ACTION? What?

I am pretty sure it is to indicate an informal rest area for heavy vehicles that must stop if run out of driving hours. The idea was started back in 2000 by Rod Hannifey of the Truckright" initiative and advocate for sharing the roads with heavy vehicles.

I like the idea. My suggestion would be to have one dot then two dots then three dots and each series a distance apart so that we can start slowing down when we wish to pull over. I'm sure truckies would appreciate this method.

Hi Geoff......these informal stopping bays are for trucks.......please refer to the thread "Safe pull overs to let faster traffic passed" further down this page. The last thing we need to be doing is encouraging caravans users to occupy these informal stopping bays which truckies often are forced to use because inconsiderate/ignorant caravanners set up camp in the official rest areas, leaving no room for trucks. Rest areas are NOT campsites.Cheers
P.S The "3...2...1" green dot system also is explained in the above-mentioned thread.Hope this helps? Cheers.

OK my mistake. In defence of caravanners not ALL caravanners are inconsiderate. Unfortunately there are always a small number of richard crainium caravanners who don't do the right thing just like any other industry and yes the trucking industry has some that fit the category giving the industry a bad image. I have travelled around Australia and have found truckies to be kind, considerate and helpful.

No problem Geoff.....the more attention we can draw to this important issue, the better,as there may be less chance of these areas being used by caravanners and others if people are aware of the intended use? Truckies licences, and livelihood, are needlessly put at risk by inconsiderate/ignorant caravanners setting up camp in rest areas, forcing the truckies to continue their journey,in search of another rest area .....these are rest areas, not campgrounds.Cheers

Aren't you all getting your wires crossed, the pull overs are just a short added strip of bitumen on the side of the road, long enough for a vehicle to "Pull over" and let the faster traffic through. I have seen, used them past Broken Hill going north. They were sign posted "Pull over" areas, there is no way you would want to stop there and rest/camp, you would get wiped out by the passing traffic. I have also seen the same sort of thing further north, but had no warning of their approach, but now know to look out for the green discs.
That article on the other thread was a truckies forum, they want us to use them.

Hmmm That wouldn't work for me anyway. If I was to pull over and keep on the verge before it dips than I would still be on the road. I wouldn't drive down in the ditch in case water had drained off the road and was all soggy. The trucks can have it. Just hope they get right off the road.
What I would like to see, is more places to pull over for a short time. Maybe to check something out. I've had, for example, the fridge door come open and I have not been able to pull over safely for quite a few k's. I thought having a loo on board would be great. Not that useful because there is often nowhere to pull over. Its a long way going through Sydney and a long time before and after before you can stop. Anxiety and inattention come to mind. How is that safe?
