Realities of COVID-19 for tens of thousands of Australians

Hi everyone,
I have read with interest a lot of posts about COVID 19 on this forum; some informed and some rubbish. I beg your indulgence to read this post and please think carefully about what you do and say in relation to this very nasty virus. Just in case youre wondering if Australia is over-reacting, it makes a sobering read. I have a medical background, and in the interests of transparency, I am informing you that I have a few autoimmune diseases. Thank you.
Facts about autoimmune diseases and COVID-19. Auto-Immune disease causes the white blood cells that normally protect your body from invaders to turn around and attack your cells, tissues and organs. Chronic fatigue is another symptom. It is not a cold or the flu, you will never get better, and even a nap will not help. Just eating a salad and hitting the gym wont slim your face or get the pounds off. Sleeping 10 hours doesnt leave you well rested, ever. The last minute changes in plans because that just got ran over feeling never makes appointments, it just walks in whenever you arent ready. Painful joints, muscles and bones, dry skin, breaking hair, hair loss, mood swings, and depression are just the tip of the iceberg. You are also prone to having multiple autoimmune diseases, they typically come in pairs of two. You easily catch viral and bacterial infections. You have days where no matter how hard you try, you just cant smile for anyone. I urge you to think twice before passing judgement and thinking our nation is overreacting to the extra measures being taken to curb the spread of this virus. YOU might be able to recover from it no problem however, carry it to SOMEONE WITH AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE and that individual wont be as lucky and is likely to end up in an intensive care unit.
Please, out of respect for those fighting Severe Asthma, Addisons disease, Endometriosis, M.E, Rheumatoid Arthritis, POTS, MCAD, Sjogren's, Scleroderma, Hashimoto Disease, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Fibromyalgia, Myasthenia Gravis, Lupus, Sarcoidosis, Hepatitis, Raynaud's Syndrome, Diabetes, Celiac disease, CROHNS disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Pemphigus, SPS, MS, PBC, Psoriatic Arthritis, CIDP, MMN, GPA , CRPS,and every other autoimmune disease, PLEASE comply with restrictions, wash your hands and maintain social distancing. (Apologies for all the acronyms but some of these diseases have really long technical names!!!)
Many thanks and stay safe out there.

Ditto Flags, I think you will find many if not most the members on this forum suffer many of the diseases you list plus some you haven't. We tend to range in age from 50's through to the 90's so it's most improbable that we get here unscathed in mint condition. Perhaps this is why we get emotional, intolerant, fearful and feisty on this or any other subject that highlights the risk to ourselves, families and friends caused by anyone (normally younger) undisciplined and not conforming to our standards of morality and law and order that was a integral part of our raising by parents/family that knew first hand the effects of poverty, famine, diseases and warfare. Apart from all that; old and cranky because we don't want to be.

I have a number of medical issues that put me in the high risk category. A couple of months ago I had an urgent operation that was regarded as urgent and high risk. I have a large immunity issue. I have lost the capacity of much of my lungs. I've been given a 40% chance in hospital and survived. But. But I look at things a bit differently. I'm the one with issues but I don't expect everyone to change their life just for my sake. No on the contrary I see the responsibility for my welfare as my responsibility. Everyone has a life to live. I don't ask or expect others to change their life for my sake. I will take the responsibility for my welfare. I will manage my risk. I will take my own precautions. I will avoid crowds. It's not that hard. I use good old common sense. I don't expect all smokers to stop smoking to give me clean air. Mind you I think smokers are nuts given the facts of what it can do to them.
All I expect is common sense. Follow the medical advice. Social distance. Wash your hands. Is that too hard for everyone to do? I'm sick but I don't want young families, or any family, to suffer financial hardship and stress just to appease my needs. We need to balance this whole covid-19 issue without the need to go into panic mode. I haven't been able to visit my 94 year old mum in home care for months and months. Yes it's a pain in the a@#& but if we all look after ourselves and stop expecting everyone to look after us then we will be fine.
Please look at the big picture without the blinkers on. Don't expect others to look after you. It's not how modern society works. Sad but true.

A good explanation, of why we should all be responsible people, and follow all the guidelines
So thanks for that info, Flags2

I observe that there is some selfish people around that just think about what they want to do and will actively try to get around thinks such as border restrictions - for example.

Nothing new here. Society is riddled with selfish people who will do all manner of things to achieve what they want regardless of any negative impacts on others. They live everywhere, in every state, in every town, in your street and in mine. It is those minority few who through their actions cause the majority to suffer the imposition of mandatory restrictions and limitations, and this isn't confined to the current CV-19 issue either, I think we all realise that selfishness is its own ongoing 'pandemic' which only seems to get worse (IMO) with each new generation.

On the subject of immunity, this news is even more worrying:
"This [UK study] confirms that protective antibody responses in those infected with SARS-COV2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, appear to wane rapidly. Whilst longer lasting in those with more severe disease, this is still only a matter of months," Griffins said.
"Similar short-lived responses are seen against other human coronaviruses that predominantly cause only mild illness, meaning that we can be re-infected as time goes by and outbreaks can adopt seasonality. With the more serious, sometimes fatal, outcomes of SARS-COV2, this is troubling indeed," Griffins said. "Vaccines in development will either need to generate stronger and longer lasting protection compared to natural infection, or they may need to be given regularly."
. . .
Then last week, a Spanish government study found that just 5% of people in Spain have coronavirus antibodies and in a potentially worrying development, the study also indicated that people's immunity to coronavirus wanes after just a few weeks. The findings show that 95% of Spain's population remains susceptible to the virus.
This means that any perceived immunity "can be incomplete, transitory and then disappear," Dr. Raquel Yotti, head of the Carlos III Health Institute, a key government agency leading the study, said in a news conference at the time.
