Looking for advice on the best / cheapest All Terrain tyre to use as replacements for the current lot which have been on the van since new in 2008. Plenty of tread left with no obvious signs of damage or flaws.
Our local BFG dealer can supply a fresh set in the same size at $299 each plus an alternative brand at $267.
Any thoughts on alternative brand would be appreciated as it`s probably time to bite the bullet and buy a new set of boots.
Regards
Frank

Is caravan and tug wearing same size wheels and tyres? Can caravan tyre be used as spare on tug and vice versa? As the caravan doesn't need a drive tyre you can most probably get a LT (light truck) tyre that will do job just as well if not better, much cheaper.

Hi Whiteman,
Google Tempe Tyres in Sydney. If you are going north worth the time. they have two stores one on the Princes Hwy Tempe. One one Woodville Road.
You will NEVER EVER Beat Their prices. I fit BFG A/T to my tow trucks. They Advertise on Evil Bay as well. Give them your tire size and they will quote over the phone.
The Tempe store has WAIT for it 37 tyre fitters alone. The place takes up the block.
The Que goes around the block, Then some.
I save $400 on a set anywhere else in Sydney. Last set of four 275/65R16s from memory $267 supplied fitted balanced and free disposal of old tyres. In 2018.

Hi Possum....that used to be the case when we ran the 100 series but a little while ago we changed to a 200 and it`s no longer the case with size but the brand stays the same at this stage.
I`ll probably continue with BFGs unless otherwise convinced to change brand.
Am a bit perplexed with the various brand names these days, so any advice concerning this aspect would be appreciated.

Evening Grey...thanks for the advice re Tempe, I`m aware of their buying power but the van is located where we live down the South Coast and I rarely take it up through Sydney.
The Woodville Road store is easier for me, so we will see.............that price I quoted was from Bob Jane at Nowra today & even though local they are unable to get a van onto their site. Won`t go into detail but it`s a nightmare, fortunately there are 2 other dealers in the area with much easier access.
Cheers

There is no value in an AT tyre on the caravan unless the aim is to match the tug tyres exactly.
Buy a highway tread tyre that has the highest load rating you can get at the lowest price you can find.
Cheers,
Peter

I agree with Peter/Possum, get light/truck tyres ....stronger side wall and hard wearing.
I had Mud/Terrain that were on a new van, nobbly, noisy and scalloped badly so changed asap to L/T.
Cheers Bob

Frank, I agree - the LT rating gives excellent service but for going to remote areas, I'd stick to A/T pattern. GT Radial, Toyo Open Country, Bridgestone 697, etc are all good. BFG are too dear for me.

Peter that was exactly the purpose, the spares mainly for the Cruiser as we used to go exploring having parked the van in a safe spot, just thought it was good insurance due to being in remote country.

So are the rims identical and interchangeable as well?
If not it is a bit of an expensive dream.
If they are you would have switched them to the tug and worn them out long before they were 12 years old.
There is no problem putting an LT on the tug if it was needed as a spare in any case.
I only use highway drive tyres on the OKA and they are perfect for 99.9% of anywhere we can go and LT tyres will go to 100% of places you want to go.
Cheers,
Peter

On a recommendation I fitted Hankook Dynapro A/T tyres on the Ranger last time around. They were about $100 a tyre cheaper than the BFG's, had a good load rating and have proven to be excellent.
Good wear qualities, good in both wet and dry conditions, quiet on the road and very good off road.
Have done 2 trips east with them towing the van and one of those a complete lap, plus other running about. Now half worn and done 38,000k's. Better than the Bridgestones I had on before by quite a margin.
Will be fitting another set when the time comes. Often on special of pay for 3 and get the 4th free.

Peter, thanks for your thoughts and answer a couple of your questions as follows:
1) The 100 series and caravan had identical rims and tyres for the reasons already stated.
2) However with the purchase of a different LC 200 it was not longer possible to continue in that vein, so for the last 4 years the van has 6 tyres, being 4 x on the van plus 2 x spares............the Cruiser has 4 x on the vehicle plus 1 x spare and so far no problems.
3) The consensus is that the BFG`s being very expensive can be replaced with a cheaper brand of tyre in the same size and load rating, which is what I will probably do.
Cheers & Good to see you are still doing the journey

Greg thanks for the response.
My original question was aimed at a set of suitable replacement tyres for the caravan but your advice is pertinent nonetheless.
Cheers

If you leave sealed roads, it does make sense to use a tyre on a van/trailer that it as aggressive as your tow vehicle tyre. You want good braking on all wheels not just the tow vehicle. There are also benefits in stronger sidewall construction with some brands too and this can be important even when driving into an unmaintained campground.

G`day Peter '
From my experience Tempe Tyres have arrangements with many tyre shops in many areas . You can purchase your tyres , they will ship them to a shop in your area for fitting.
You pay the local shop for fitting and balancing . Good service .

Have a look at Tyresales.com.au. There prices are pretty good. decide on the tyre you want and then get a price. They deliver to a tyre place near you. I have bought 3 sets in the last 1 months without a problem, with some very good savings.
