well we have just had a phone call saying that our new van that we ordered at the Melbourne caravan and camping show in February is ready for pick up. I'm not really sure that we should be picking this up considering the dealer is in Traralgon and we are in Eastern suburbs of Melbourne, but the dealership said it's fine and will provide us with a letter in case we get stopped. What are peoples thoughts?
I'm thinking I probably should ring the police to get their advice, but to me this seems like a non-essential trip (especially since we will not be able to use the van until lock down is eased). However, since it still seems to be OK to go for a haircut, maybe this is deemed fine!

Hi Paul,
Glad you are seeking advice. Your dealer wants his money and I doubt he is providing you with informed advice. Nor am I sure a letter from him will impress anyone. I believe you answered your own question when you noted that the trip to pick up your van is not essential. If you are in a postcode that has to comply with travel restrictions, please don't travel. It is for your own protection as well as protection of others. Not going is the right thing to do, especially since you doubted whether you should in the first place.
Take care

Thanks Flags2. Yes, it's just that its been quite a while since we've been waiting for the van, so its very tempting to go. I might give the police a ring tomorrow to see what they say. I'm pretty sure that they will say no. At least I can then tell the dealer that the authorities have told us we can't.
It will be so good when all this covid business is behind us and we can all start acting normal again!

You could tell them to deliver it to you?

And get them to detour via a local weighbridge and see how the Tare complies to the VIN Plate.
Delivery is part of their essential work not yours.

Iana, yes but I think there would be a charge for that. I don't particularly want to pay extra just to have the van sitting in our driveway instead of the dealers yard, since we can't go anywhere with it. And even so, is that any better than us going down there to pick it up? ie. someone has to be travelling around and possibly spreading the virus.

Hi Paul,
I would hit them up to deliver as I am sure they would love to get the payment and if you stand your ground they would do it free of charge. I agree with others, it is not essential travel for you, they could easily and legally do a "non-contact" delivery.

I would expect that the delivery of a new van would also include a 2 to 3 hour handover and explanation of the vans operation.
My first question to them would be if I come to pick the van up, will you still be giving me a full and comprehensive handover and explanation of the van before I drive away? I would also be requiring that of them if you can convince them to deliver to your address, although I doubt they will do that at no cost. I certainly wouldnt accept a non contact delivery or handover at any cost! If they say no, then as far as I am concerned, the van would wait until they do.
We have seen too many posts about poor or non exisitent handovers, and the new owners struggling to find out from others how their van works. They are behind the game from the start, and in many cases find it hard to get assistance from the dealer once they are out of the yard and the money paid.
You have, and are paying, full tote odds for the van and service, and not getting the full service may create difficulties for you in the future.
Hope it works out for you.

Hello paul and a very warm welcome. how exciting, a new van. Although tempting to pick it up, it might be best to contact the covid19 hotline and ask. handovers take longer than an hour And are necessary. Depends on the rules at present, dont want a huge fine or worse the virus itself. I wish you well. Regards rocket.

Thanks for all the feedback. Contacted the police but got a recorded message saying that they can't offer any advice on the restrictions related to COVID. Contacted the COVID hotline and actually spoke to someone, but they basically just read what was on their website and said they could not offer any further advice. I am thinking we will just delay the pick up until restrictions ease. That way at least we will get the proper handover too.
Regards Paul.

Hi pghollis
I can only give an opinion, of my own gut feeling, which is that it is unnecessary travel, to pick up a new caravan, you can not use, while in lockdown
Regardless of the/any legal complications, if you are, or are not, breaking the lockdown
I would be concerned about catching/spreading the Coronavirus
Today numbers have not yet come out, but some of the media, are predicting that new cases will be in the high 400's

Yes, Tony, apparently 484 new cases today. I've told the dealer that we will wait until things are better. Hopefully in 3 or 4 weeks things will be improving.
Stay safe everyone.

Hi Paul
Congratulations on the new van. As already said the dealer will want his payment of any outstanding money, so call them and
ask them to deliver it. If they are unable to deliver then I would seek a permit to travel, or maybe wait for a couple more weeks and see if we're allowed out to play. Good luck when you start packing it can be a challenge.
