Would love to know in case anyone driving the above car and got a caravan!
So the questions would be:
1. What type of caravan are you towing?
2. Any problems as the ASX Diesel 4x4 Auto has only max Towing Capacity of 1400kg. Mine is the 2018 Model
I would love to buy a second hand (Max $15000).
Being doing lots of research already but unsure regarding towing ability with the above car.
Thank you for your advise

Hi Joker, Don't know anything about Mitsubishi other than they used to make a great Pajero - Didn't swim too well though, so have had a succession of Patrols since.
Don't forget that you can download (Free) heaps of technical specs and checklists to assist in purchase of a van at www.caravancouncil.com.au/

Hi Stefan.....Seems that that car is quite capable of safely towing 1400kg,but your biggest problem will be keeping within the rear axle rating, which is only 1000kg. The GVM is 2060kg,with tare at about 1500kg,so it seems that your carrying capacity is about 560kg.However,a 1400kg van, with the generally accepted 10% towball weight, will add 200kg to your rear axle, and take about 60-70kg OFF the car's front axle. IF you minimise the load in your car,you may well stay under 1000kg on the rear axle,in which case you'd have a van with weight on wheels of 1260kg (1400-140kg towball weight) behind a car with weight on wheels of MAYBE 2000kg,so the car could be over 50% heavier than the van.GOOD! GCM (total allowable weight of car and van) is 3410kg,so you are safe there too.My advice is,before you buy,to take an ASX to a weighbridge and get the weights done, particularly the rear axle weight. When you have that figure we may be able to offer advice, but at this stage it all looks OK to me? Cheers.

Thank you yobarr for your detail reply. Gee I think I have done enough research but sounds like I need to get more into details!
I was thinking a couple of different caravans but not to sure ASX can handle it without putting to much pressure on the engine etc
I specifically base my research on the Tare Weight of each caravan (Jacyco Feather: 948kg and the Coromal Execel: 989kg).is that OK or do need to look at into other more important details!
My ASX details: Maximal Towball download 140kg, Towing capacity braked 1400kg, Gross combination mass 3410kg, maximum rear Axel load 1000 and front axel load 1120,

Joker, these second hand vans will most probably have awnings, toolboxes, etc. added after specified Tare Weights (even if they were originally true). Careful how you go, even mattress, linen, blankets, crockery, cutlery and residual water in the heater storage tank would need to be calculated - before you start adding food and clothing and a case of beer/wine. Then you need to have a full gas tank/s and water tank.
Do a careful check list and do a little arithmetic. Don't forget to ad a miscellaneous items, to your checklist, to cover your novel, scrabble set and that adorable little whatever that must be purchased at a country fete.

G'day Joker,
Be careful - the tare weight is only the starter. It includes everything that the van had on it when it left the factory. This does include the mattress(es), might include the awning but not all the stuff that Possum has included. If it has one or two gas cylinders supplied from new, they are empty, as is/are the water tank(s).
The ball weight given on the plate is the unloaded weight.
The weights that affect most of us are the ATM, GVM & GCW.
Personally, I would be looking at a camper trailer but again watch the weight. Don't give up on these units - most of us started with & enjoyed camper trailers & they will go far beyond what many vans will go.
Even some of the CUB, Avan Campers will be too heavy for your car. Remember if you constantly tow towards the maximum weights, something will eventually break in the car & that could be expensive!
