Just some general information if anyone will know pls, looking at just a couple of nights at Gregory Downs on the river behind the pub, we have stayed there a few times over the years but i'm hearing that the area is being run by a group of some description, not sure who or what, anyone heard anything about the camping there ! I understand that it is packed to the limit at this point in time though, we are looking at end October.
Thanks in advance

The Council has prohibited camping down on the river (ignored by many) -Wills Development Rd Camp area next to hotel (opposite on Eastern side) permissible - suggest you ring local Publican 07 4748 5566 to ascertain local congestion.

Morning Dave and Maz, I just took a peak at Wikicamps and mostly good reviews and a couple a month ago.
Not sure what you mean about "a group of some description" though. I agree with possum to ring the pub.
Mmmm, I have never agreed with a possum. Normally I'm yelling at the noisy buggers to shut up

The hard part is keep away from people grouping together !! Why these stay over places get closed ? But then it creates another issue !! Where do people go ? I usually stop or stay if theres a few campers . If its crowded ? I move on . Yes ringing the hotel may help
? Bta he may not know whos coming ? Unless you have to book a head ? You cant have too much information . Imagine how bussy it would if borders warnt closed ? I would be one of them . Hybinating down 2760 (Cool) NSW !!

We have friends there at the moment, having lunch at the pub 2 days ago, no mention of any camping restrictions.
In the past "no camping signs " placed there by council have been ignored and on some occassions removed. Last time we were there a couple of years ago it looked like council had given up trying to stop people camping down alongside the river.
Great spot, as someone else suggested, ring the pub and see what they say, you may want to be a bit cautious with their response all the same. They may want you to camp in their caravan park!!

Camping in signposted restricted area/s, particularly when "Free-camp" is only 150M up the hill - Deserves the $1200 fine. Remember the town water supply comes from that river and many campers treat it as a sewer - Local Council worker lives directly opposite Hotel, and he will follow Council directives, even though he is a great young man.
There is a place where you can bush camp a couple of klms upstream - if you don't want to follow Rules.
The Publican is a very nice Lady driven to exasperation by inconsiderate and tight fisted campers - If you can't follow Gregory River's Rules go down to Burketown down the road and camp on Albert River www.bing.com/videos/search

They have been camping down by the river for years, most people do the right thing but I guess no matter you will always find a few that don't. Sadly, human nature! We have camped there on at least 6 occassions over the years and I suspect people will be doing it well into the future, hopefully with some common sense and care for the area. During the dry season its always packed, can't always get down the bottom, there are some camping spots up the top but a bit dusty, still if your desperate still ok and a short walk for a swim or a meal at the pub. I suspect the town water supply comes from further up stream away from the camp area regards Ian

Thanks guys,
yep i have seen the sign of " No Camping" as you say, we camped there around 20 yrs ago [no signs then], main reason i asked was that a mate of mine said the area has been taken control by "Grey Nomads" referring to this forum site, LOL
what she meant was it's been taken over by travellers in general i would think.
Thanks for all your replies, I can now put her straight !
