It was a long time ago that I was driving road trains in the NT, WA and Qld. I wrote a book about those days, and seeing as I was still a teenager when it all started, the memory banks were strained.
The book was entitled "When CO-ORD was King. I can't imagine any of todays drivers doing the trip from Alice Springs to Darwin at 34 miles an hour !!??
Then the second book was/is "The Coach Crew". Tells the story of my time as a Coach Captain with Australian Pacific Tours, out of Melbourne, to all of Australia.
Problem. I recently took my old computer to the local "You beaut computer repairs" The bloke who ran the show, promptly lost both books. I must admit that apart from turning the machine on, I know stuff all about
them. I know I sent copies of the books to a few nomads. So I am wondering if any exist, could they please send me the books.
Regards
Pipes

Get a copy from the National Library.
You are the author and owner of the copyright, so no problem getting it all. copiesdirect.nla.gov.au/items/import
Cheers,
Peter

If the books were published, there would be a library copy.
From the post, I feel it may have been a text/PDF file only.

Libraries are modern identities. They hold electronic copies of electronic materials.
I am sure that if Pipes gets in touch with them and tells them exactly what happened, they will be very sympathetic.
Cheers,
Peter

Like you,I am not a "computer whiz",but I have been advised by our Webmaster that it is not possible to send photos by PM,and that I had to first obtain a personal email address, which I have done when sending photos to other forum members.Perhaps a PDF is treated similarly? Good luck! Cheers
P.S If ever the intended recipient of a message was reluctant to provide their private email address, perhaps a temporary Hotmail address,or similar, could be set up?

It's possible your data is still on your computer but you should using that computer immediately.
For consumer computers data is not erased from a hard drive when the file is deleted or the disk formatted rather its directory entries are marked that the file is deleted and, over time, its disk space freed for use by other files.
It is often possible to recover data which has been deleted (I have done it many times) but you really do need to know what you're doing, some technicians may, many will not.
This software works well:
https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva
Using another computer download the software and place it on a newly formatted 8GB or larger USB drive.
Boot the computer with the lost data and insert the USB drive into it.
Run the Recuva software from the USB drive - do *not* copy it to the computer.
Have Recuva perform a deep scan - this may take some hours.
Identify your lost data and save it to the USB drive *not* the main hard drive.
Job done - except it may not be that easy, you can but try.
Next write out 500 times, using a blunt pencil:
"I promise that in future I will always back up important data" :)

Hey Pipes,
I have sent them both to your email address. They are in MS Word format so they can still be edited.

The National library of Australia has "When CO-ORD was king"
can't find the other one.
Might be best to phone them and explain the situation, I am sure they will be very helpful.
OR:
In your browser type: copiesdirect.nla.gov.au
go to: catalogue > search > Type title > press find > order a copy.
Alternatively:
I am pretty sure the books are still filed on your hard drive.
So, you could ask the computer shop to find them for you and restore the desktop shortcuts.
Or if you are using windows 10, the following may help you restore the desktop shortcuts.
If you are using a windows PC, you can search the file system.
open File explorer: This may be a desktop icon. If not click the windows symbol in the lower left corner of the screen. This opens the start menue. Click on "Windows System". This opens a pull down menu, click on File Explorer.
In "File Explorer", click:
This PC > Windows (C:) > Users > [Your login name]
This is normally where all your files are stored & you can search for your books here.
on the right hand side of the file explorer window, there is a search box with a magnifying glass symbol. Type the name of your book here, press enter and wait for the search to find your book.
Once the book folder is found, you can right click on it and select "create shortcut" this will appear on your desktop.
