Has anyone travelled this route lately? If so can you give me the heads up on road conditions, and any good over night stops. Good to be back on on this site, thanks Jugs.

It's bitumen but narrow in places with road works a constant companion. You could meet road trains, be willing to give them room especially on bridges, floodways. Take care, drive to conditions.
There is a stop at Belyando Crossing, not expensive but fuel is as it is freighted in from Townsville. We're heading that way tomorrow (from Townsville) - whether we get to Clermont or Belyando will depend on what time we leave - have an appointment in town first. Normally we go from Townsville to Capella for the first day but won't get that far tomorrow.

Update,
Arrived Clermont at around 5pm - left Townsville mid morning.
There is a good rest stop for cars, trucks - has toilets, just north of Belyando Crossing. As I said, it is bitumen, two lanes. From there on North, the road is excellent but there is lots of road works going on. There were other places where a van could be parked off the road but no facilities, little shade.
From there south, it is as Snippy said - lots of uneven, rough in places road (again road works in some places). My minimum speed was 81kph, max 105kph - I drove as conditions dictated.
There are lots of mine workers in utes, a few trucks & a few road trains - none gave us any issues.
We did consider stopping at BC but felt going on to Clermont will enable us to reach Roma tomorrow night (meeting friends coming in from west).
