Recently a friend of mine purchased a 2016 Esperance Motorhome on the Iveco Chassis. It was fully loaded with Bullbar ,Towbar , extra Batteries , extra Solar ,extra Water Tank , Hydraulic Levellers . This was sold as a car licd.meaning under 4.495T . He brought it around to show me . I said to him have you checked the weight with all these extras , no he said. I said fill it up with fuel , gas bottles full and water tanks full before you put anything in it and go over the weighbridge . To his shock it went 4.550t , with no food , clothes and all the other incidentals that you take. I said your lucky you bought a Iveco because the GVM can be upgraded to 5.2t with a letter from Iveco . So he got the letter $200 , HV road worthy $110 and $2500 Qld Transport upgrade , then Rego was about an extra $700 . Lucky he already had a Truck Licd. Expensive exercise.
Moral to this story is get it weighed before handing over the Cash.

Re ( because the GVM can be upgraded to 5.2t)
And be prepared to stop at every Weigh Station in NSW ( probably be waved thru) and other states now/in the future.
And good advice (Moral to this story is get it weighed before handing over the Cash.)

The buyers of all Esperances were given the choice on purchase whether they wanted the upgrade which was just a formality with Iveco. From memory only about 40% of buyers opted for the upgrade so a number of them out there with 4495kg GVM.
What was the $2500 "upgrade" charge for?

Only have to pull into 2 in NSW both automated ones . The rest only if directed in. Never been called into one in my Longreach

$2500 was Qld Transport upgrade charges . I think all up with stamp duty it cost him well over $5000

I would say that most Motorhomes on a car licd. 4.495 would be over weight . It comes out of the factory stock standard and the compliance plate reads 4000t on a Esperance which gives you 400kgs ,then the owners and dealers add Bull Bars Tow Bars and everything else and they are over.

To my knowledge TMR do not charge for rego paper upgrades and they certainly don't charge stamp duty.

Montie ,don't know what state you are in but when you buy a vehicle in Qld ,you pay stamp duty . Especially high when over 100k. As for paper upgrade I can only tell you what he showed me , it had to go over the pits , where they remeasured it and inspected it , this vehicle is 4 years old. If you don.t believe me ring Qld Transport .

Their is only 2 in NSW that I'm aware off that call all vehicles over 4.5 t in . These are automated ones , drive in and you will be directed to come in or return to highway . I didn't pull into the one at Half way Creek and I got a please explain letter from them or face a $2000 fine . I put my case forward that I thought you had to be directed to come in and was unaware of the new automated checking stations. I was let off with a warning. No Automated ones in Qld yet.

There is no stamp duty payable on a GVM upgrade in Qld nor to my knowledge is there a TMR charge for Iveco upgrade.
Purchase stamp duty in Qld is 3% under $100k and 5% over $100k but he would have paid that regardless of the upgrade.
We have done some Iveco upgrades and a nominal TMR charge was the only fee plus $200 to Iveco if you do not have the letter.

I didn't say stamp duty on gvm upgrade ,was on purchase. Anyway it cost him $5000 all up to register it.

There are a few at 4.5T and most at 8T+. There is a 4.5T+ one just south of Katherine in the NT. It can not be bypassed.
Do not wait to be "pulled in". You must drive in unless directed not to.
Cheers,

Hi
I though I should update my knowledge on this as I have a heavy vehicle licence even though I do not need it currently. Looking at the Transport for NSW site it lists four sites
Heavy Vehicle Safety Stations (HVSS) that require pulling in for >4.5T GVM i.e.less than 8T.
Chinderah, Pacific Highway. Pine Creek, Pacific Highway. Halfway Creek, Pacific Highway. Bell, Bell's Line of Road.
My previous MH was over 4.5T GVM and i was directed back to the highway the several times I pulled in.
Cheers jaahn
