I am interested in anyone who is towing with a Silverado 1500. Your general thoughts, weight of your van, fuel economy etc. I am not interested to hear from owners of any other vehicles. Thanks in advance.

I was thinking of one when looking around but a friend at my old home base had one and advised me away from them as he felt towing a twin horse float or caravan they were a bit too light in the rear end. Apart from that he was happy with it. The new ones might be a lot better though now.
I don't see all that many around lately but I do see heaps of the Ram's. I believe they are now building them as a right hand drive for those countries as well as left hand for those countries. I think if was doing it all again I would seriously look at a Ram or even maybe a F250. Those two could make my decision hard I think.

Hi Doug...the Ram 2500 (or bigger) and the F250 are in a totally different class from these small capacity "Big Utes". Your "friend at my old home base" did you a massive favour by pre-warning you about limitations.Have a great Xmas.Cheers.

There will be a lot of negative comments about the big USA trucks. That's ok. But compare them to all the "local" available trucks. Yes some may have "light" axles but again check the figures. I owned a RAM for 6 year and it was a great truck.
In the USA the Silverado is not considered a heavy duty truck. But again it depends on options.

There is little doubt that the bigger USA trucks......Ram,F250,Silverado are fantastic bits of gear,if you like that sort of stuff,but the lightweight versions of these vehicles simply cannot stand up to scrutiny from anybody with any understanding of weights.Just last week I met with a chap who had recently bought a Ram 2500 to tow his huge 5th wheeler.He was horrified when I illustrated to him that he had,for the last 2 years,been running around severely overloaded,and uninsured,when towing his van,or his massive boat,behind his previous vehicle,a Ram 1500.Cheers

As was advised above, the OP would be wise to do some research of his own because I will bet my Christmas Baubles that the expert has not towed anything with a Silverado. It also should be noted that the OP did not state any weights, measures or tow configurations of his requirements but that doesnt matter to our resident expert as he always automatically assumes that any enquiry will be towing 3500kg with a ball weight of 350kg. Much better,I think, if the Australian specs were provided,which I have done for Trevor.The main problem will be the rear axle,which is rated at a miserable 1724kg,but thankyou for at last contributing something positive.Cheers

I understand what you mean,Bob,but,as I said,I was involved in a "learning exercise" with Trevor,who was trying to learn about PMs.As you obviously are aware,the site can be programmed so that one gets an email that alerts one to the arrival of a PM.This notification is NOT automatic,and must be selected by the recipient.Many PMs are missed by people not selecting this option? Guys, thank you for all the input, and of course, some robust discussion. And thank you Yobar. Your information was well worth reading. Just for everyone's information, I have now purchased a Silverado 1500, 6.7 litre V8 to tow my 21 foot Silverline. I currently have a Ford Ranger XLT which I think is a great vehicle. The problem is that the weight of the Silverline has us right up or perhaps a little over the legal limit. We pack fairly light but it is a balancing act. The Silverado should handle the van quite well. Being a petrol with a huge engine, I expect the fuel costs will increase over the diesel which typically returned 17/100kms.
I am impressed with the technology that is available in the Silverado and, if driven sensibly, I believe that the fuel usage will not be too bad. I do not take delivery of the vehicle for 3 months. Once I get it and do a trip with the van in tow, I will post a report including field usage.

In the USA the Silerado is highly regarded as a great drivers car. Lots of bells and whistles. In the USA those looking for heavy towing usually opt for the F350 of RAM 3500.
Either way you can't go far wrong with the Silverado.
