I've just been away (with the hubby this time) using wikicamps on my phone for the first time. Imagine my horror when I turned on my mobile data to find I had used up my data allowance. How can this be I thought when I've not used it. After my husband (my technology man) investigated he found that wikicamps is working in the background the whole time my phone is turned on, even when my mobile data is turned off.
Apparently, you have to go into the app and tell it not to do this, but I'll probably delete the app because when I go on my next solo trip the last thing I need is to have no mobile data left.

Cant say i have ever seen wikicamps do this , maybe its an issue you should raise with them . Wikicamps is a very useful tool for a camper and would be a shame to delete it because of something that could be easily fixed . Dont throw the baby out with the bathwater as my old Mum used to say .

Maybe the data use was the download of all the maps. These need to be downloaded if you want to use it off line. If you did not download the maps, then maybe it was using the data for location purposes. As outlaw said, check with WikiCamps admin.
It is a good tool. Mine is on my iPad and is used offline with no issues. It will connect with wifi, when detected, for updates as available.

+1 I have not had that issue. Don't delete it.

Wiki Camps had an option and a warning wether you wanted to download the maps to use off line or just use the app when internet was available.
I dont know if it is the same with the updated version but the map downloads were quite large files from memory.
To save a bit of data I only downloaded the state that we intended to travel in at the time.
If you choose not to download the maps you can still use the app when in mobile service.
I agree with the others, Wiki Camps is a great app and even though you may have lost your data this time the maps will be yours forever and if you now delete it you will have wasted that data forwver.

We didn't bother with it last year (at home this year), if you are in a car only it's pretty easy to find stops to stay overnight. You get pretty good at spotting long disused gravel pits & on the whole pretty clean.

Just having it on in the background will use a very very very small amount of data, not enough to really be noticeable. The only semi large data use from Wikicamps is when you download maps, and even then it's not really all that much, with a much smaller amount of data use when you are looking at reviews. You don't say how much data you went through but I (and I do software testing for a job) don't think Wikicamps is the culprit, and deleting it you will just be deleting a very useful app and possibly still leaving a problem with your phone.
