Wanting to make my Hino more secure (currently has no screens or locks) and a bus door that slides out and across bus. Does anyone have experience with replacing this type of door for a security type?
Thanks in advance
Susie

Any good automotive panel beater could replace the sliding door with a swing door the major problem would be in having the bus engineering re-certified.
There are a few companies around Brisbane that modify Patrol wagons to make them into "twin-cab" utes, someone on here may know name/s, That's who I would contact if I needed it done - it certainly wouldn't be a cheap exercise.

There is a company in Brendale, named 'Creative conversions' that does major modifications to Patrols,LC200s etc. They may be able to help,or at least steer you in the right direction......but isn't Beauty Point in Tasmania???? Good luck! Cheers

Hi so i`m assuming you havn`t got even the basic original door lock that has the internal pull up/down button? Anyway as that could be opened quite easily just by breaking a window in the door ,i put an ordinary house type yale lock on mine ,the one with a sliding pin that comes out when you lock it ..bear in mind that the door actually comes straight out for 50mm or so before it slides so this will work ok .. Was a bit of work but it did the job well .That wouldn`t be too much of a job for a decent panel beater repair shop ,or caravan repairer .Sorry havn`t got any pics now, as bus long gone .

Hi Susie ,a bit more info , mine was a LOCKWOOD 355 DEADLOCK ,Has a normal yale type face plate on the outside of the door ,The lock has 2 sliding large pins that come out and go up into 2 hoops on the plate that bolts to the door frame ,very secure . Cheers .

Hi Susie
Possibly all you need for the door is a solid security screen door mounted outside the original door with a dead lock as Andy said. That way you can open the normal bus door which is the common bus style, for some breeze, but dead lock the screen door for safety. Any handy person with a bit of nouse or a screen door maker could make one and put secure hinges to hold it, and the lock plate. The same goes for security screens for the sliding side windows, get some made to size and screwed on the outside with the heads ground off or through bolts and nuts, or similar. That will also allow you to open the windows but be secure. Getting the air through the bus is good on hot nights. Feeling secure is also good too

Unfortunately adding an external door outside of existing "wizz bang" would be illegal without pre-engineering approval, as it would change the external profile of the bus probably creating an edge to catch objects or pedestrians. A smooth side or flush door is mandated.

Hi Possum
Well there must be a lot of converted buses around with them and the window screens so the rego inspections are not fussed about it. Possibly it is time to be a bit less precious and just make a common sense conversion that is not obviously dangerous nor has sharp protrusions. I would.
Possibly you might also be confusing the type of door on the Hino. It is not a wiz bang door in my opinion from the ones I have seen, it is a bi-fold door that folds inside. I could also comment on the awning arms below also but will just let the picture speak ! NOTE this is not the bus but a picture off one off the web.

Hm
Possibly there are several types of door on these Hino's. Also two different locations too ! I did see a wiz bang type too! but you could possibly fit a screen door inside for that type ! I guess I have not seen a lot of them but was always interested in them. I would make a suitable screen that fits and is not protruding nor has dangerous edges and be happy.

Jaahn, Susie (OP) stated "bus door that slides out and across bus" - I interpreted that as a door that initially pushed out about 50mm from cavity and slid - as typically what's called a Wizz Bang", if this is not the case then a door could be manufactured with a hinge, similar to Rainbow pictured - Noting it still would require an Engineering certificate.
