You can still use it as social media - I'm still communicating through several Facebook groups. Just can't access media stories, or post news type
links to them. No skin off my nose - I never used it for media stories anyway - I prefer to use more reliable sources.

Please advise a "more reliable media" source. There is no such thing in existence.

So far, FB have banned all types of information sources from posting directly and I believe they have blocked account logins in some cases. The vast majority of those affected are not main stream media or news sources but not-for-profit community organizations. There are workaround but volunteer groups don't always have the skills or resources to find or use them. Equally service groups and organizations are also affected. There has to be a middle point reached. I think both sides need to make concessions but I think the feds have grossly underestimated the impact of a no FB world.

Actually, I think that Facebook will lose a lot of 'FACE' over this, it seems that world is now getting more than a little disturbed by Facebook and their actions in Australia. I wouldn't be surprised if other countries soon take similar action...let's wait and see!

Duh I use Facebook to keep in contact with family and friend around Australia. I have a life and I share my adventures with them, and they know where we are.
As for who give a tuppenny toss about loosing the moronic news feeds from the equally moronic news services.

The big issue for me is the shot gun approach to who was blocked. BOM? Emergency sites? What dumb a$#@ decided what was to be blocked.
Remember the sun always came up every morning and set every night before Facebook arrived. It will continue to do so. Something will take it's place. Maybe old fashioned news papers. Remember them?

I don't see an issue, why rely on FB to access the sites, go directly to them http://www.bom.gov.au/ same with news sites, no need for FB, problem solved.

Not-for-profit community organisations and service groups were wrong to choose FaceBook in the first place. There are plenty of free or cheap web hosting services that would provide a much better platform. Maybe this will open their eyes.
In any case it seems that FaceBook made an economic decision. Apparently the value of Australian news services is zero, at least to Zuckerberg. I'm finding it hard to disagree.

I note from current and many previous comments that it appears that the majority of regular contributors on here arent FaceBook users.
My thoughts and views are that the social media platform is great for catching up with family and friends but more so for them knowing where we are and what we have experienced on a daily basis. When we started out I was doing a blog on another platform but honestly, I found that the younger generation access FaceBook quite regularly but tended not to access the Wordpress blog.
Zuckerberg played his hand very well by including Govt Sites in his media exclusion. Now the egg is on the Govts face in as much as they now have to negotiate with him to reinstate those pages. Wether that will happen or not is anyones guess. I think there is more to this blocking of news with a roll out of a vaccine and a federal election looming. Some may consider the less news reported to the bulk of the population the better the chances of success by eliminating any comments in opposition. It needs to be noted that there are currently 14 million Australians that access FaceBook.
Some say you can access these govt sites separately from FaceBook and yes, you can, but now, when you are using the FB platform as a travel blog for example, you cannot apply a link to a conversation so as you may highlight a certain situation appropriate to the state and area you are in. I know over the last year my family were interested in the Covid restrictions in Qld purely for the fact that they knew what Rob and I were experiencing. This is just one example, the weather is another one particularly during cyclone season. During lockdown periods FB was very handy for us all to communicate regularly and privately.
FaceBook, like many other internet platforms require the user to set up there level of security before they jump in blindly. There are also facilities to dictate a set audience for your posts to eliminate any stalkers, snoopers and trolls from viewing your content. There are menus where you may reject certain advertising which in turn changes the logarithm so you may see only adverts you may be interested in. Although maybe not perfect, FB is something that is used regularly by the younger generation and if used properly it is not a problem. On a daily basis you may find that many of you give your personal details away on other sites and including currently gaining entry to any venue where you have to scan a bar code or even purchase anything, or have a store based rewards card.
I dont care about the news sites but I hope that FB will reinstate access to our Govt based information sites.
Regards
Angie

Why do you need facebook to access news on line ? Apple devices come with a news app. that will take you to all the major news sites anyhow , I assume windows devices would have something similar. The only reason I have kept a Facebook account is so I can use Messenger when overseas to make cheap video calls - there are plenty of other internet services out there that do the same thing. When I was in the middle east social media sites were banned in countries like Oman probably to force you to use their local phone providers. We got around the blocks by using a VPN maybe that would work when logging on to Facebook - personally I couldn't think of anything that I care less about than what happens with social media sites like Facebook, Twitter etc.....

Yes, most sites may be accessed through Google or similar or Apps on Apple and Android,
BUT
most of those links were only accessed by PAYING A SUBSCRIPTION.
So this being the case Zuckerberg has complied with what our Govt wants, and that is protecting journalism.
Do I personally believe that?
No I dont, I couldnt imagine that either side of govt would really have that much care and consideration for most of the journalists in the Australian media.

Spot on Dorian!
I *seriously* resent being asked to register with an internet service which will harvest my details and information to make a profit in order that I may access the ABC or BOM et al - websites which I pay taxes to provide. *No* government organisation should be permitted to use Facebook or similar! The BOM, in particular, has an outstanding website and sure as hell does not need Mark's silly offering.

Just as a throw away comment....data is huge business bucks, with the amount of personal data they harvest and use to bombard users with advertising etc i've often thought WE should be supplied at NO charge with mobile phones etc and just pay per call. I saw a vid of a sound technician in a booth sneeze and SIRI said "bless you"

Hi Mike...a most impressive effort,if I do say so! This following comment is not a criticism, but made in an effort to help you with your contributions.I have noticed that when quotation marks are required, you are using "stars".Be aware that I am not flash on computers, but if you are using an iPad,as am I,simply pressing hard on the question mark on the bottom right of the screen produces quotation marks. "Quote"...please be aware that this is post is made only in an effort to help.Cheers

Mike is using asterisks to emphasise the text. Quotes are not appropriate for this. That's how we used to do it in Usenet (a text-only medium).
BTW, you should add a space between a punctuation mark and the word that follows. Maybe that's a quirk of using an iPad???

To think I almost opened a F.B. account a couple of weeks ago, now I'm glad I didn't bother. I'll just have to continue phoning/texting/emailing (although to be honest I do private message a friend in Tanzania a couple of times a year via hubby's F.B.).
It's like most technology, we forget (or don't have a back up plan) how we managed before we had it. I still keep some cash in my purse in case the internet crashes and I still have candles in case of a black out. I guess I'd better go for a walk to check my legs still work as I've now had my own car for almost a year now.
All jokes aside it does scare me how much power (and money) is in the hands of so few.
A wealthy Tanzanian once said to me, "with money and position comes great responsibility; for community, country and the planet". Shame more people don't think like him.
I totally agree. I always wondered why it suddenly seemed to be the place to find a business etc. Frankly I only use it for family and friends and have always gone straight to Google to find anything else. Not a great loss to me for sure :)
