When we bought our new D-max nearly 18 months ago, I had a small scupper vent fitted to the front of the canopy to keep the dust out.
Does anyone know how long the springs last? Luckily I found ours had broken before leaving Cape Palmerston (south of Sarina) before TC Narina filled up the tub with water! Getting new springs in Townsville has proved impossible. Yes, I can get them on eBay with a new seal (not required) but I would have thought they would last longer than 18 months - or am I expecting too much. It is not open all the time - just to vent the tub to keep it a little cooler & keep the dust out when we travel on dirt roads.
ARB showed me their vent - it looks to be more flimsy with the catch being made of plastic. It is a larger vent adding more pressure on the catch.
I had thought of making a remote control open/shut vent out of it so that I wouldn't have to close it when we ran into a sudden storm but finding a suitable solenoid is proving to be impossible.

Lots of views but no-one has suffered the same problem, I assume. Perhaps scrupper vents aren't made for almost constant use. Or they are made for slow dirt road speeds? Or they are like everything else made these days - last for a while, then they break?

Sorry old mate for not replying earlier. I did go out and have a look at the vent between a lull in the rain down here on Central Coast NSW where it been raining now for quite a few days. I did not see anything to suggest
This time round we have a ARB vent as you say made of plastic now a shade off 7 years old mostly left open, closed when washing the ute or it is raining. Out of ten for quality maybe a 5 but it is lasting. No spring s
On my previs ute it was a truck metal one, hard to shut and open about 4 years with zero maintance and better quality. Had 2 springs.
I am not a lot of help.

We have a Dometic one fitted to the van - the spring snaps vent shut like a rat trap - never game enough to close with hand - always use a loop of fine rope and lasso the handle.
Ours seems solid enough, doesn't leak - only problem with it is, can't fit an insect screen to it when we want to leave open on hot nights.

Thanks Radar, Possum,
After leaving two messages with the car's dealer, I visited him today & found who installed the canopy (TJM). They bought in some springs just in case - I was their first customer. $10 it cost - for a piece of strong wire!! Still they cost from $17 on eBay & I didn't need the bit of rubber they call a seal.
The next task - installing it (was told it's difficult).
