There has been a lot on the news over the last couple of days about possible side effects of the corona virus vaccine and how the risks are being managed over-sea's. So I am just wondering if any of our forum members have been for their first vaccination and what side effects if any they may have suffered . It appears to me that we have a great chance here through this forum to get some first hand information from our peers, rather than relying on what the media and fear mongers may be pushing. As of yet I haven't been called for my booking but, being over 70, I am expecting a call over the next few weeks and will be happy to report how it effects me. I am thinking to most of us the affects will be minimal although I have heard some horror stories. Landy

Not sure where you live, Landy, but where I am, the first round of vaccines has just started. I phoned our local GP a few weeks back, and was told to ring back "early next month". I phoned at 09:00 hrs on 1 April (a singularly appropriate date???) and was told that all places were filled for this round. In a way, I was disappointed, because I had already phoned up but I was well and truly beaten to the post.
So just by being over 70 years (in our area anyway) means nothing. There are 4 categories of people who qualify as part of Group 1B. They are over 70 years old; people with severe respiratory problems; people of aboriginal descent; and people who work in critical areas. I qualify for the first 3 classifications, yet I wasn't contacted by anyone. ANd when I contacted them, I was way too late. Go figure....
I suggest that you contact your local GP or hospital and find out what is going on where you live - don't wait for someone to contact you.

Hi Landy and erad,
You should be able to book a place for your Covid 19 vaccination on line. Go into the Australian Government Dept of Health web site. Click on Eligibility Checker and follow the prompts. It will ask you a series of questions and then tell you if you are eligible. It then asks you your postcode or town. You then go through HotDocs to make a booking. It will tell you when the next booking is available. For Cooma it says after 7 days. Click on that. It will tell you the next booking is 13th April. This is the first doctor on the list. The others say ring or not available. For Ballarat it says 1st May with one particular doctor and for the other doctors it says ring........ Hope this helps.
Just a by the by. My husband who is over 70 did this on Wednesday morning and got an appointment the following day in Toowoomba. At the time there were bookings also available all of next week but since then that week has filled up at the clinic he went to. He has had no adverse reactions neither has the other couple people he knows.
Just a note you cannot have a covid shot and a flu shot within 2 weeks of each other.
Hope this is some help to others.
Cheers.

My wife and I both had our 1st shot last Monday (29th).
We went to the the Gov. site on line, found a choice of local vaccine centres, and booked that way. Not available at our own doctors yet.
The booking was through Hotdocs.
Plenty of questions to answer, some heath info, Medicare numders etc.
At the surgery all went quite smoothly. Must have been 8 or 10 staff giving the jabs, Astra Zeneca.
Waited 15 minutes after for reactions. All good. Made appointment for 2nd shot, in June.
On Tuesday we were both a bit tired so took things easy. I was OK after that.
But my lady wasnt. She had just about every reaction listed on the warnings. Tired, stiff joints, loss of appetite, wicked cough.
Temperature so high that at 5 am yesterday (Friday) I called an ambulance. After great service from the Ambos things settled down and today she feels much better.
My wife is a fit, active 76 year old.
After al this we still strongly believe in the vaccine program for Aussies. And the rest of the world.

We had to delay our first Covid shots until SWMBO has completed a course of Cortisone injections. I could have had mine earlier but we chose to have them at the same time.
Our first Covid shots are at 1pm on 7/4
Then there are our Annual Flu shots scheduled for 9.20am on 21/4
The second Covid shots are 3.30pm on 30/6.
We had no trouble selecting suitable appointment dates.

Not me personally but my elderly mother, 90yrs of age, in her nursing home has had both of her jabs with no side affects at all, 1 week after the second one. She had the Phizer vaccine being in that first group.

Landy,
I would suggest making a call to your local doctor.
While some may get a call, I think that it is expected that you will make your call and appointment. I know that was the case here in SA for both my Dad, who had his first injection Wednesday at Victor Harbor, and our son, who has health issues here in Adelaide. His first injection was also on Wednesday.
It certainly wont hurt to make a call, especially based on erads experience above. As a matter of fact erad I would see what is going on. It may be they have just booked up all current supplies of vaccine and you could get an appointment when stocks increase again. I would just keep calling as you are eligible for the jab now.
My wife and myself will be in the next round, if the roll out ever speeds up.

Our local clinic is not doing covid vaccinations, too much trouble they said, effort and bureaucracy involved. I was dissapointed, I think this is more of a public health service and they should have made the effort regardless. We went online and found a clinic near us, booked in and had our first shots on Wednesday. I had some side effects the next day, just felt a bit ordinary, but am fine now. My wife had no side effects at all. We are both over 70. The interesting aspect of this is we were required to see a doctor before the shots to establish any health concerns and to have a follow up appointment 3 days after to check on any side effects. An appointment for the second shot is then made. All this was a bit of a pain but the clinic is bulk billed and they are being cautious regarding the at risk groups so I am not complaining.

We, me and the missus, had our first lot on 31/3 in Kununurra WA. No side effects for me and maybe a bit of a sore arm and a faint headache for Jenny. Hope for the best there and hope it works well.

As travellers we are registered with medical practices all round the country.
Have been asked to book in from QLD x2, SA x3, WA x1, NSW x2.
Can't make any of them and certainly can't wait 30 days for second jab. Just have to see what evolves.

My doctor wont give it to me as I have extremely Low blood pressure, so would be at risk of blood clots, and he said the same to my wife, as she has bad sinutitis, as welll as asthma and is also subsceptable to the clots.

Gday Landry,
I checked the Gov web site on found my GP was a vaccinator, rang them on the 19 Mar, they hadnt received the AZ vaccine as yet but where taking bookings. Got call back on the 22 Mar, saying they received the AZ Vac and where starting on Sunday the 27 Mar at 12 pm.
There was only 80 doses was I intrested, I state yes: advised to be there no earlier or later than 12 pm. In and out in 25 minutes, no major side effects: slight tenderness on the arm late on Monday arvo and bit lethargic for acouple days, thats all. I have been booked in for second jab on the 20/06.
Will be getting flu and whooping cough (daughter in law due in early July) on 15/04.
I am putting having sore arm due to doing heavy lifting taken junk to tip on the Monday, I am 74 y.o. should know better, probably contributed to lethargy also.
Cheers: John.
PS. If my wife had of stayed instead of going shopping and coming back to pick me up, she may have also got the jab ( shes in the mid sixties not in 1b schedule) as the clinic had left overs and asking staff or people waiting to collect others if they wanted the Vac rather than waste it. Have some one take you and they make get jab when every one else had theirs. J.

Thank you everyone for your useful responses. So far the thread is mainly going in the direction that I had hoped for, which is a reference of what the people we interact with on this forum have experienced in getting the vaccine, plus what side affects they may have had ( facts). What I was hoping to stay clear of is the merits of whether or not you believe the vaccine is safe, as I believe the debate that this is likely to cause will distract from the thread's intentions and could be easily covered in another thread. Cheers Landy
