Someone asked this question in another thread and rather than answer where only a few will see I decided to start a new thread. If you know a better way please post.
This is for Windows but, I imagine, is almost identical for Mac:
Copy the link (URL) into the clipboard eg. http://www.bom.gov.au/vic/forecasts/melbourne.shtml?ref=hdr
Enter the text you wish to appear on the forum upon which people can click, eg. Melbourne weather forecast
Highlight that text and then place the mouse cursor into the highlighted text, this causes the text to become un-highlighted so you must highlight it again!
The "chain" icon in the middle of the middle row of icons at the top of the edit window will now be click-able rather than greyed out, click on it and an insert link dialogue box will appear
Paste the link URL (which you copied into the clipboard) into the "Link URL" field
Set the "Target" field to "Open link in a new window"
A minor observation ....I don't need to click it again when highlighting the text. Maybe it's the browser ... I use Firefox.

Oh my goodness. This is what I saw when I followed the "activeboard link. No wonder the interface doesn't work properly. That is one of the worst layed out webpage I've ever seen.
I really don't have any major gripes re the way this forum runs, couple of minor idiosyncrasies, nothing to stress about.
Yep there is better forum software around but this is what we have, for the most part it does a good job.
The email/subscription/notification I bought up the other day (and Cindy responded to) seems to be resolving and I also note we have emoticons back.
Changing forum software is an enormous task, most seem to be getting along fine with what we have.
Instead of pointing out the shortcomings of the current software I would suggest a vote of thanks to Cindy for keeping the forum up and running for all these years, a pretty thankless task I can assure you.

The software is bundled with the forum. When you subscribe to Activeboard, you get Sparklit. There is nothing Cindy can do about it, and I'm not suggesting that she try to change anything.
In the past I have approached Sparklit with a suggestion, and they obligingly accommodated it by implementing an additional feature. It may very well be that, if I/we listed my/our annoyances and approached them, they might actually fix them.

Set the "Target" field to "Open link in a new window"
Leave the "Title" field blank and click "Insert"
That's it - pretty tedious isn't it.

Maybe the mods could put that in a "hover" display when you mouse over the chain link icon.
This is what you get when you paste a link into the Quick Reply box:

This is what you get when you type [ url ]your_URL[/ url ] (without the spaces) into the Advanced Editor:

And doing it as outlined

As I said, that has never worked for me.
I'll just tried the URL thing and that worked. Why not use real HTML?

Maybe they could fix the whole interface. It's not even valid HTML.

This forum's software was developed by Sparklit.

Just testing, MV Fidelio, the ship bringing my 5th wheeler to Australia, about to leave Baltimore on 6/07/2021
I have tried to do this before on here, thanks for the help
I've always thought it was pretty straight forward, Cindy explained the process shortly after I joined the forum.
Copy and paste the URL, highlight it, clicking solid chain link in the tool bar will bring up insert/edit box then complete the details in the box.

In my humble opinion, this is the best forum software. It's free and open source, plus it has both mobile and desktop interfaces.

Sparklit's software has too many annoyances.
