POLICE at Cairns in Far North Queensland were today offering free safety checks for caravans and camper trailers. Operated by the city's Road Policing Unit, weighing will continue on several highways in the days to come. The educational initiative provides travellers and locals with the opportunity to weigh their caravans and discuss safe towing practices with officers. Police said they had been "overwhelmed with the fantastic positive response" so far.
Checks were being made at:
Pyramid Truck Pads, Bruce Highway, Aloomba.
10/05/2021 - 9am - 1pm
12/05/2021 - 9am - 1pm
Fruit Bat Truck Pads, Captain Cook Highway, Aeroglen.
14/05/2021 - 9am 1pm
Walkamin Truck Pads, Kennedy Highway, Walkamin.
19/05/2021 - 9am - 1pm

This is a great initiative. Although I have a bit of an idea how much my loaded caravan and tug weigh, I don't know exactly how much they weigh.
Where can one go to get their rig weighed before getting pulled over by the authorities? I'm a long way from QLD.

Buzz you can go to any public weighbridge - they are pretty much in every suburb - get two weight measurements 1. Caravan, 2. Car/Tug, you then add to get GCM. Usual charge is around $20.
Best emptying car and van (empty water tanks take off gas bottles) you then have your base weight - Weigh and list everything that you put in (bathroom scales) - easy to stay legal and safe.
Remember every magazine, toilet roll and bottle of wine you are carrying adds up your payload.
