The link worked OK for me too.
Interesting, but sold out & no price.
I wonder how it works & how accurate it is.
I assume that the 'spring' between the ball and the tongue is compressed by the ball weight & actuates the meter. Accuracy & safety? are issues that come to mind for me.
Edit .. Had a second look & it said 'Low Stock' & priced at $270.

To answer your original question ; I have never used one although I have taken my van to a local weighbridge and had all weights checked. As we rarely add any gear to van other than groceries, gas and water I believe we are within limits.

I suspect the gauge being discussed is hydraulic rather than mechanical. (spring)

I put all towball scales in the same category, useless peices of junk not worth spending money on.
There is far too much discussion about towball weights, there are more important weights to worry about as towball weight become irrevelent as soon as it is connected to the towing vehicle.

I will put that as a no then shall i ?
You might want to invest in a dictionary as well judging by the spelling in the reply.

"Useless pieces of junk..." Youve hit the nail on the head Graham.Way back,I bought several different brands in an effort to compare their accuracy against the "Bathroom scales" method, which is VERY accurate.Without fail, the purchased units gave false readings, sometimes to the point of stupidity. Not only were the readings inaccurate, but the difference in readings between different brands was also of concern.Highly inaccurate, without fail.Eventually I gave most of these units away to people I don't like, although there still is one example lying around somewhere in my shed. "Useless pieces of junk".Cheers

A lot of caravan dealers use these Graham, I suppose they might need to be calibrated properly, but the dealer weighed mine and I did again on the weighbridge ......very similar.
Wouldn't be messing around with bathroom scales, they can be very ordinary results as well, at least that's what I tell the missus.

Well, all I can say is all those that say they are useless would actually be useless them selves if you were required to work in a quality assured company.
Not one of you has mentioned thet you tested them against a set of calibrated/certified scales. Unless you do your just having a good tug. And the bathroom scale system it a joke. At best a rough guide.
Sure we don't need to be precise, but I suggest you go back to the drawing board.

"Again,on a weigh bridgevery similar" you say,but surely you would understand that weighbridges generally weigh in increments of 20kg,so how can weights possibly be "very similar?".And I would be most surprised if any reputable caravan dealer would use this rubbish.Cheers

Hi Neilthankyou for these obviously well-considered posts. However,I suspect that you have little understanding of how the "Bathroom scales" weighing system works? Whilst there is little doubt that this method is slightly less accurate than calibrated scales,it is nevertheless very accurate, and certainly is well ahead of the various rubbish devices marketed as "towball scales".Cheers

The van was weighed with full water tanks, gas etc at Luxury RV by a towball scale.

Very happy with both readings. Stay happy.

Its clear you have little if any experience on this subject matter. So, I'll try to explain in simple term.
You see, your checking a scale of unknown accuracy with a scale of unknown accuracy then add a potential error using a jerry rigged lever system. You can't claim its accurate. Ball park at best. And as mentioned weigh bridges have a low level of definition. e.g. 20kg.
A useful way to check them would be using 4 precise weights. Say. 50kg, 100kg, 200kg, 300kg. If they all weigh accurately then you would have a level of confidence. However due to the shape of the ball this would not be practical.
Another way would be a NATA tested press.

I think it was 2018 or 19 I was pulled over at a weight checking point and all weights and measurements etc checked. It was like they were out to get me. Anyways, they had this gizmo like a fancy box on two wheels with digital screen and a tow ball set up. With the van off the car they put the tow ball under the van hitch to get tow ball weight. As no one was behind me I asked if I could see how accurate my fancy scale was, "no problem mate". Done the same way in the same spot etc, my fancy and very expensive scales showed 1kg heavier than theirs. Close enough for me.
OH! All my weights were under their max's. I was confident anyway as I had not long before gone through a major weight checking process.

Hi Graham.
I have not had any experience with that particular tow ball scale, I do feel it is a expensive bit of gear with one particular use only, we have a German made Reich digital scales for not that much more dollars that has multiple uses as it is a small flat platform scale.
I read where these scales are with in 3% accurate, police use them in Europe for roadside checking weights of RV type of vehicles, if you are shown to be overweight the police then take you to a certified weighbridge to be 100% sure of a conviction.
They do not weigh much ( a couple kilograms) our scale lives under the drivers seat, compared to a certified weighbridge weight the scales weigh was very similar.
I forgot to mention, I don't have any science degrees.

I am pretty sure that once i have weighed the new van after it is loaded and ready to go, I should not have to re check it all that often.
Some form of lightweight, transportable weighing device certainly has its uses though, and if affordable and reasonably accurate, it would be sensible to keep one in the caravan for the odd check now and then.
