Fro anyone living in Queensland, give very serious consideration to joining RACQ.
Early this month a radiator hose blew off a connection due to it never having been
reconnected properly by a repairer some months earlier. Of course all the fluid was
lost in seconds.
At the time we were climbing in 2nd gear pulling 3500 kg near Mt SELWIN and the road being
narrow and windy a pull-over was about a full k further up the mountain. The oil temp went
to 210!
We had no idea what had happened - and the complexity of the engine compartment and
cover plates underneath certainly prevented any chance of diagnosis in the field.
So on to RACQ - the stress levels were sky-high - had no idea how much longer I would stay
married - fortunately we could get a good phone signal due to a recent install of a CelFi.
A wonderfully helpful team took over - reassuring and helpful and informative beyond belief,
calls to me every short while with updates and details of salvage and transport arrangements
being made. Better than a tourist agency!!
A tow and carry vehicle was on site in 1½ hours!! Car and van taken to Canberra where a
site had been arranged for us at the showground! 300k !
Nobody in Canberra could look at the car for 6-8 weeks!! A call from RACQ to see how we
were going soon resolved the issue - they would come and get us and take the car and van
to QUEENSLAND! 1200 k !! And fly us home or hire a car for us!!!
All done and fixed - cannot thank RACQ enough - even got a call a week after we were all
home to see how we are and to get my e-mail address so that I could claim any other
expenses on an internal form!!!
Go get a RACQ Premium policy right now or consider staying close to home!!!
ps - car engine fine - oil not burnt, largely due to my religious addition of Liqui - Moly
to the oil in every vehicle under my control since day dot! (I had 3 reps Holdens
years ago all with 600 - 800k and still tight as a drum when sold).
A worthwhile addition to your tug especially if you tow much. I do - 20-30k pa.

Well done RACQ in this instance - please advise details of the Premium Policy you have with them.

Had another incident last year in western Queensland - a bloke broken down miles from anywhere
and no phone coverage.
I pulled over, got his details and NRMA (NSW organisation) numbers etc and went to the next town and called NRMA for him.
When I told them where he was, they were disinterested and told me to arrange a tow for him to the next town!
Was too big a job for them! I can't remember where we were but it was sealed roads and about 50k to this nice little town that had a mechanics shop. They said that they would go get him and put him up at their home until they fixed things for him.
For Possum - RACQ ULTIMATE - about $265 pa.

Do I understand you correctly: are you saying NRMA refused roadside service, for no good reason, to a member who had broken down in a remote area?
My understanding is the state motoring organisations have inter-state agreements and therefore NRMA would have passed this to RACQ.

Possum. My RACQ renewal notice arrived today. Ultimate for me is $227. Various discounts are in there because of my length of membership and some insurance cover.

I had a fuel issue in early May between Hay and Griffith and reason to call RACQ. The number diverted to NRMA who took my membership details, verified them with RACQ then sent a patrol. They got me going but 30mins later it recurred. The second call was passed to RACQ Ultimate after the same verification process. RACQ sorted it out so it was covered by reciprocal arrangements even through 5km over standard NRMA distances and made sure if wouldn't count against my annual entitlements for Ultimate. Great service. In the light of day and away from a busy narrow highway, I managed to rectify the fuel issue which was a poorly sealed filter housing.
G'Day Brodie,
Friends here in Townsville also had the same Roadside Assist as you. Not being technical people, they weren't watching alarms as they were travelling up the Tanami Track. Long story cut short, they & their camper trailer were taken back to Alice Springs where their car needed a new head amongst other bits. They had cracked the radiator overflow pipe, lost coolant & cooked the head.
We have more than one reason why we do not travel with them!
I have the next policy down from yours & cannot fault that either.
