i hope you never find yourself in situation similar to this situation , a gang of young criminals (some quite large) terrorizing hapless citizens in the dark , not much one old bloke can do except turn a few lights on ,make some noise , call OOO . if there is a group of you, you might be able to organize a counter attack( probably not quick enough ) but on your own you could find yourself in a bit of strife ,think you could arm yourself , you would be in more trouble than the criminals ( they usually have nothing to lose and don't care anyway ) sad isn't that these young gangs are are becoming more common and our society has no answer to the problem
as i said lets hope we don't find ourselves in a similar situation

I think that when confronted by a similar situation the average person won't even think when they see girls being attacked.
A couple of years ago while travelling in SW Western Australia I went to the assistance of a young lady being attacked/molested by a pair of young idiots in the back of a pub car park. The loonies were ripping her hair out and trying to take a shoulder bag of the girl while the other molested her - all happening in a moment.
Without thinking I stepped in - disabled the hair puller/puncher and set about holding the molester in a sleeper to unconsciousness - but from behind a third thug slammed a beer can into my face - cut me up pretty bad.
Cut it short - the matter was eventually settled out of court - my expenses were 10's of thousands and the thugs's counter action for $100,000 never made it to court.
But without being explicit, there's two a-holes that will think long and hard before they try it again. The kid that smashed the can into my face got detention wherever they incarcerate juvenile offenders, and the other two got lengthy extended sentences
suspended upon bonds etc. Noted by the Magistrate that they had "suffered quite severely".
Can you believe also that the Magistrate also admonished me "And you should have known when to stop" !!!!
The young lady and myself have become lifetime friends. (Nah, not what you're thinking - she was 22 and me 74).
Do it again in a flash. Anybody would - you don't even think.
Who could stand by and watch?

unfortunately that could make you the criminal, until our elected officials change the laws that would allow us to protect ourselves . similar situations are happening in townsville, brisbane an other places that are in the headlines at the moment, the offender are not the least bit concerned with getting caught ,they will soon be out on bail .their lives will go on if they happen to get killed or injured in a police pursuit the police are the ones under the hammer.
moral of story is if you find yourself in a situation that you are required to defend yourself or assist someone else , fade away ,do not wait around to assist police with their enquires . i saw nothing, i heard nothing. as far as a base ball bat or similar you should not hesitate if you loose possession of it i'm sure they will not hesitate to use it on you .

I know what you're saying and i hear you , but i have protect myself and family because i know what I'm am doing is the right thing to do,
So i will still take my chance with the wasp spray and bass ball bat.

I'm alright Jack is unfortunately now becoming the norm now.
Wasn't like this in my early days. I'll go int bat anytime - but I do have
an array of "personal weapons".
A terrible turn of events. 2 female travellers traumatized, a 13-year old dead, shame on
people who refused assistance.

But thats not the extent of it - all the noise and screaming and no assistance from any other campers.
The screaming was so extreme that the managers heard it 300 meters away.
And to think that the two girls had to give up their beds to some of the perpetrators!
