I suggest you pop over to the "Travel blogs" forum and find a poster called Tamsun; send her a PM asking your question as she travels with a cat.

We travel with 2 cats, last 5 years. Each is on a lead and harness.
We had a collapsible pen ut the ripped it open.
Cage is only good for short term. Harness is best and easier.

Best of luck containing a cat unless you have a roofed pen.
They are remarkedly athletic when they want to be!
If you lose it in the outback, it's tat ta for sure!
And another predator on the loose.

Dog crate (wire) will keep them secured. Harness and leash.

As I said above, lead with harness.
Both of our cats have come off their lead a few times. Their natural instinct is to head for somewhere they know. i.e. the van.
Cage is not really practical. Cats travel in the van and sleep through it all.

We travelled with our cat
We always had her in a harness, with two leads tied together, (tied to the table leg), to give her room to roam, (in the motorhome)
We had her food bowl at one end, and her dirt tray at the other end, of the motorhome
The wife always made me stop, when the cat had done any #2's and she then, cleaned out the dirt tray
The cat never left the motorhome unless it was in someones arms, with the harness and lead attached

Hey there, I'm Tamsun and I travel with my cat Kali. I had some steel caging that I put together (from Bunnings) so she could sit outside with me but I rarely use it now. It came in a box with about 12 panels designed for chickens but that was a few years ago. Something made up could be better to suit your needs?
I would always make sure she was in constant sight as there are so many predator's out there, potentially even your cute neighbor dog. She walks on a harness (close to the MH) with me now instead. This took some time however to get her used to it. Not sure if that's what you want to do with your kitty but if so here is the vlog if your interested.
I have seen another camper who had an outdoor screen which was huge and gave their two cats ample of space to roam! Super awesome!
I am planning on doing a travel with cat vlog hopefully soon which could potentially help. Good luck on the road with your kitty!

A couple of times that I have seen different people with travelling cats, they have used good harnesses and one couple also had an annex which must have been well secured as they had a cat and a small dog. The cat was walked with a harness around the particular caravan park. They happened to choose around sunset or later.
