Its taken us a few years to get to the point where we can now hit the road, which is happening in March next year. The Chief Financial Officer has ticked off on it so now were on final countdown. We managed to spend a month up in the Kimberley and completely loved life on the road and are looking forward to seeing what this awesome country has to offer.
As a starting point we are looking at heading across the Nullarbor and then deciding whether to head to the NT or up into QLD. We would love to hear any suggestions about where would be good to head to from there.
I have enjoyed hearing about everyone elses trips but must admit that I did suffer some jealousy.

Are you travelling with no time limit? Ideally at that time I would spend a bit of time on the Eyre Peninsula and then head to the centre around early April (watch out for Easter school holidays as Uluru etc gets packed then!), spend some time really exploring the centre and then head up to the northern NT very early in the dry season, and get to really enjoy it before the July super crowded time.

At the time of year you will be heading off (Autumn) the tropical North becomes quite pleasant - There are heaps of places to see if you turn North at South Australia and head up through the centre to the top, then come back down to the Savanna Way and go East into Qld.
We have done this trip several times always have an enjoyable time on the road free (donation) camping.
Yes head north as the climate gets colder so it pretty much temp wise stays the same ! Although could adjust slightly so your not part of the initial great escape ! Enjoy take your time ! Dont worry about your NEXT destination! Till youve checked big time where you are . Yes I have trouble following this myself !! Enjoy the journey !!

I have always been a spur of the moment type of camper/traveler which is to say I don't plan my trip as such, I decide the direction and head that way with the intention of not being in a hurry to get from A to B as I think it's not about the destination but the trip along the way, the best people to ask about things to do and see are the locals when you arrive in a place you like.
I once spent 6 months in one town just because it had so much to offer I just couldn't leave, and I didn't get to see it all. I can't wait to get on the road myself and unfortunately my first part has to be planned around fishing trips that are done every year but from March next year I will be in northern NSW and the only thing then is do I head north or south? lol hard choice.

Woomera has a museum that is good for a few hours. Not much else to see.
Maralinga is only available as a tour. Home | Maralinga Tours It is not possible to visit privately. The tours rate very highly.
Access is via Colona (on the Eyre Highway) and Ooldea. All but about 80-90km is bitumen and the gravel bit is pretty good.
Cheers,
Peter

I second doing the Eyre Peninsular and when going through Coober Pedy go and visit the Painted Desert and the Breakaways. We did both of these with tour companies (2017) as the roads weren't suitable for our motorhome, and we did the local town tour as well instead of driving it ourselves. So much to see where ever you go. By the by we're not great preplanners either. We have a date to leave and a date to be home and a general idea of where we want to go and just take the rest as it comes. We have a Camps book, an atlas/road map and visit tourist information centres along the way for information and brochures. Cheers and enjoy.

Hi Ger08,
You are heading towards what we both "call home" - the West Coast of SA. Considering we only spent 16 years - (Pat was there for a few more) there, at Ceduna, & we've lived in NQ for double that time, it made a significant impact on us.
Could you let me know what your rig consists of ie can you travel on gravel roads? You are correct - there is some awesome scenery out there to see & I note that Gayle may have seen some of it.
All the best, take your time & enjoy the trip.

Woomera has free star gazing if your there on a Friday evening
S.A. has so much more to offer than you realise even the Flinders Ranges is so diverse Arkaroola northern Flinders is so different from Southern Flinders Wilpena, then there's the coast.
Covid is reminding me how much S.A. actually has to offer (still need to go N.T. if I want to warm up in winter though, lol)
