Hey there everyone,

I realised that my road side assist expired after an interesting mishap to say the least and hoping to find what everyone else uses which may be cost affective and a good quality service. I'm in a motorhome in NSW.

 Hi Tamsun,

After 60 years of belonging to NRMA NSW then Queensland RACQ I can only have full praise for them.

We are Premium Ultra member and that covers our car and caravan  with a some extra items.

Tread carefully as your motorhome can  be to long or 2 high for a normal tilt tray, questions need asking of the road side assist people.

Likewise to Radar with regard to Victorian RACV and given that they have reciprocal agreements it probably doesn't matter much who you choose.

 Actually they are all owned by the same company.

After NRMA advised that they will tow only 100km at no cost,and that they have strict limitations on recovering your van along with your car,I did a bit of research.RACQ provides 200k towing for your car,and that includes any size van up to 3500kg.Cheaper too,so I now am with RACQ because often I am hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town.Today I travelled over 300km on dirt,between two towns,with nothing in between,so it's reassuring to know that I have cover in that type of situation.Cheers

 Bear in mind,Bas,that your motorhome is one vehicle.My car and van (2 units) weigh a total of 6800kg,and RACQ will tow them both.Cheers

Conditions and restrictions are always changing. RACQ now has a cover called "Ultimate RV" specifically aimed at motorhomes. It's weight limits are over 6t.

Most car/truck dealerships offer roadside assist if you have services done by them - don't know about Motorhomes though.

I have just received the renewal for my Roadside Assist package from Ken Tame / Allianz insurance.

The primary proviso is that I am / you need to be a CMCA member at $44 per year. This applies to both caravan and motorhome users

The Ken Tame assistance package is $180 and they offer
= 24-hour roadside assistance
= flat battery starting
= emergency fuel delivery
= flat tyre replacement
= lost or locked-in keys
= towing service - to $600
= accident co-ordination services
= emergency message relay
= taxi services

I have also been to see the NRMA for a comparison of their offerings (and I have their booklet beside me now)

The NRMA 'Complete care' package at $205 p.a.
= all the above plus
= towing up to 100km outside metropolitan areas
= assistance ONLY up to vehicles of 3,5 tonnes or caravans up to 2 tonnes (see ** below)
= $3000 max towards costs associated with breakdown

The NRMA 'Ultimate care' package at $259 p.a. (see ** below)
= same as above but with $4000 for costs

** For vehicles over 3,5 tonnes or caravans over 2 tonnes, the "Vehicle Plus" add on package is needed ... at $132 p.a
This extends assistance for vehicles over the above weight limits


So --- for me with my 4,5 tonne motorhome,

Ken Tame is $44 CMCA membership + $180 ........... total $224
NRMA is $205 / $259 (if I wish) + $132 ................... total $337

For me the answer is simple

We've had our MH for 18 yrs now - we use it actively for travel for about 2/3 of every year and the vehicle now is close to 1/2-million km on the clock

Over the years we have had 1 insurance claim and 3 breakdown calls for help.  The insurance claim was for minor damage to both vehicles and KT fixed it all up quickly and without any fuss

The breakdowns have been 2 minor and 1-major, and again KT has fixed it all quickly and promptly.  One was at 10pm at night - it was a broken radiator hose (and it's always the small one at the back of the motor!!) and a truck was with us within 45 minutes - we were delivered to the closest Ford dealer about midnight, slept in the vehicle overnight in the street out the front ~ the truck pickup and delivery to the Ford place was at no cost to us. Next morning we had a new radiator hose fitted (at our expense as it was way out of warranty)

Another time we had a fuel pump failure - we were 300km from the closest Ford dealer - the truck was with us about 4 hrs after our call (using someone else's satellite fone as there was no coverage where we were) and KT paid their portion of the bill and we had to pay the rest ~ again with no mucking around, no outlandish queries or quibbling.  While the MH was out of action for the week, we were in a motel at their expense - we were offered a car but declined as we had friends locally who "entertained" us while the vehicle was out of action
