My daughter has a 1980 Windsor POP83a van she wants to sell, and she's been asked the tare weight. There's no VIN plate and no handbook. Googling has led me nowhere. Does anyone know where I can get this info please?

None that I can think of.
There were no compliance plates in 1980 and any plated weight from that long ago would mean nothing anyway.

A 1980 13ft Viscount Pop-top has a GVM at 1500KG. If that helps.
Contact Colin Young, Chief Engineer at Caravan Council he may have records of the van you are enquiring about - size of van would assist with an approximate.

Tare means nothing except that that that was the weight of the van when it left the factory.Everything after that is part of the load.Just tell the buyer that the tare is 750kg.If he weighs it now,it will weigh more because of all stuff added.Gas bottles etc.Cheers
P.s Cancel tgat estimate of tare.For some reason I thought that it was a lot smaller than 18',so tge figure I gave will be waaay out! Cheers

Thanks all. I had no idea it would be this bloody hard! My daughter can't find the rego papers, and a replacement takes 10 days to hit the mail system. It's an 18 footer, so I'll tell them an approximate of 1500kg. If they want more detailed weight, THEY can find a weighbridge!

What state are you in? If in NSW you can get the information online. It shows Tare, GVM and expiry date for any registration number. Maybe other states have similar.
You can also get a fresh reg certificate on the spot by going in person to a Service NSW branch. Other states? Check to see if the local branch does vehicle stuff.
Surely she will need the rego papers to transfer ownership anyway.

Tare Weight is the measured weight of the unloaded van. You can only determine that by weighing the van.

You are selling a caravan and the potential buyer has asked for the tare weight probably to establish if his tug can legally tow it and you have given him a figure that you pulled off a forum that bears no relationship to the measured weight of your van.
And they reckon the Industry needs cleaning up!

If a dealer did that it would be considered misleading and deceptive and he'd be ordered to make a full refund and probably lose his licence.
I think this Industry cleanup that everybody thinks is necessary might need to look outside the Industry as well. The cowboys are not just confined to the Industry.

I was helping a friend buy a 4WD motorhome. It was about $100K and was a very likely choice.
We asked the dealer to get it weighed, each axle seperately. He refused.
We walked away.

Agreed Montie.Why cannot people take responsibility for their own actions instead of bleating and moaning to anyone silly enough to listen when they realise that they've made a mistake? This thread is a perfect example.Instead of driving a miserable 60km to a weighbridge,this vendor will feed some bovine excrement figure to the purchaser,and be happy.However,IF the prospective purchaser is half interested,he may wish to tow the van to a weighbridge,and in doing so he may find problems that were not immediately apparent.Being someone who drove over 1000km/day,for many years,I simply can't comprehend the reluctance to drive 60km.Spare me. Well he did actually. The GVM was 4.495T (it could have been higher, but wasn't as it had been derated) and he gave us a number which I did not believe, so I asked for a weigh bridge slip.

Fact of the matter is that this is a bog-standard, no modification van. Even the table has been removed, and it has no gas bottle. The tare is probably less now than when it left the factory! Also, I think you're all well aware that almost anything larger than a 4 cylinder fart-box should be able to pull that tare.

Sorry you feel that way Dave.You asked a question,and were given,by Montie,who is a reputable RV Dealer,the ONLY appropriate answer,which was "WEIGH IT". Seems you didn't like that answer,so came back with "has to be an easier way".There isn't.The figures provided by Possum are of limited help,but are at least a starting point for you.However,having only 300kg carrying capacity is pretty useless,in my opinion.Again I will say that there is only ONE way to determine the current "tare",and that is to WEIGH THE VAN. Otherwise,tell the prospective purchaser "We don't know what the tare is".The fact that he asks for the tare shows he too knows little about weights,as tare means absolutely NOTHING,but at least you've then given him a choice. ADRs came into force in 1989 so vans built prior to this don't have any weights such as TARE, GTM or ATM against them, and will not have a compliance plate.
VicRoads "WILL" require you to obtain a weighbridge ticket to register a 'pre 1989' van in Victoria, unless it has changed ownership and been registered in Vic 'post 1989', in which case VicRoads will already have the details on file and a phone call or visit to a VicRoads office will get you the relevant details.
PS, this is why some folks buy pre-1989 car and van combos because they have none of the modern weight restrictions. The old rules were towing up t 1.5 times the tow vehicles mass, and no limits on the vans.

Problem over. The van was bought a few days ago by a young shearer and his partner, who had been living in a tent for months as they went shed to shed. I told them the original tare and that was all. They couldn't care less, they were so happy!
