Recently renewed our membership. As part of general membership they are restricting towing of vans and trailers to less then 2000kg. Now costs extra per month to cover towing of any car and trailer combo over 3500kg. Not happy but like most insurance you don't like it until you need it.

Insurance or roadside ? If you're towing you're better off having the highest roadside membership for the few extra dollars not general cover.

Hi Glenn. That's interesting, but there surely will be conditions conditions regarding the car to van ratio, and the like? Your BT50 would likely weigh more than the van you have in your profile, and be alot safer than many. All this rubbish about the popular twin-cabs being able to SAFELY tow 3500kg is exactly thatRubbish. Perhaps this is the first step by insurance companies to enacting a defacto "law" that the weight on the car's wheels must be greater than the weight on the van's wheels. As you may know,if a vehicle with a GVM over 4500kg is towing a PIG trailer (most caravans are PIG trailers) ALWAYS the weight on the wheels of the towing vehicle must be greater than the weight on the wheels of the trailer. This is why earthmoving contractors who shift their excavators etc with PIG trailers often have to throw a couple of ton of ballast into the back of the truck to make sure that the truck weighs more than the trailer. This minimises or eliminates the chances of the trailer controlling the truck,or the "Tail wagging the Dog". Common sense really, and the sooner such a law is enacted to cover ALL towing combinations the safer we all will be. Bring it on! Cheers

I think Grumptytoo may be referring to Roadside Assist and the caravan weight limit for NRMA to tow it.
If you look on the NRMA packages page you will see that their trailer weight limit for NRMA to tow it is 2 tonnes (no trailers at all covered in the lowest package). But the two higher packages have an add-on available called Vehicle Plus. It bumps the trailer limit up to an impressive 10 tonnes, at a cost of $132 for a year. It's been this way for a couple of years now at least.
So the cheapest to have a van over 2 tonnes included in their towing service is $360 per year.
As I read it, the 3,500kg limit mentioned is not the combined rig, but the GVM (weight on the wheels) of the vehicle covered by road service. So the BT/50 fits within that.
Grumptytoo, does this address your issue?
