Hi All. We need to replace our 10 year old 18ft Dometic vinyl awning. We have had no problems with this awning and have been doing a bit of research on whats available. It seems the choice is to either go again with a Dometic replacement, purchase an Aussie Traveller equivalent, or have one made up by our local caravan service centre. The "Arcadia" vinyl in the made up replacement is the same material as the Aussie Traveller awning and appears to be of a lighter grade than the current Dometic awning. Has anyone purchased a replacement awning from "Affordable RV Awnings" as although they use the Arcadia material, they offer a longer warranty period. Anyway, would appreciate some feedback as to which replacement awning others have found to be the best. Many Thanks

Welcome to the gang Cliff, enjoy here and out in the playground.
Just incase you are unaware.
I replaced my 7 years old Dometic awning Vinyl and roller only last year as arms OK. The repair people ordered a Dometic replacement but no way will it see 7 years. It seems a lot thinner than original. I have been told since that the original had three layers but the newer ones only have two. The look it too. $1500 fitted.
Keep Safe on the roads and out there.

A few years ago, I bought a replacement awning from EBAY. The original awning was basically white with blue trimmings. The new one was listed as white and blue (or maybe blue and white?), but when it arrived, it was basically dark blue with white trimmings. There is so much heat transmitted through the awning we cannot sit under it during the day if the sun is intense. Check before you buy. The guy we got ours from was Bruce Eddie 0416736420. The price and delivery were very good. We bought a complete awning and roller assembly, and simply bolted it up to the caravan.

On our car we have an ARB awning, obviously not suitable for your setup.
But what we noticed is there is a lot less heat transmission compared to a plastic tarp we were using as an awning previously. Both had similar level of colour brightness.
The new awning is made from 300gsm polyurethane coated canvas. So much cooler.
We also have a mosquito enclosure to hang up underneath, which can be closed as a tent, so then there are 2 layers & a small air gap between. There are effectively no heat issues from above.

Hi
Hi go with the replacement if your hardware is good the domestic material is crap.
Extend outdoors have a much better quality material although the colours except one are a bit out there.
I personally stay away from any white in the material especially up high and dont use the rafters any more due to stretching .
I have had 3 dometic awnings over the years through insurance and I have been lucky to get three years out of material.I have had one hit by hail one ripped to pieces in a storm and then a branch go through one so make sure its in your insurance as some insurers do not cover them or will charge a huge exces.
Cheers

We are a bit of a fan of Aussie Traveller, a short distance from our home in Brisbane, have been exceptional on 3 occasions, one a warranty job 3 weeks after they had done the replacement, they were happy to let us use it for next 8months of touring and then in our own time bring it back for replacement.
Aussie Traveller are awesome people to deal with.

G'day CLIFF,
Again welcome to a good forum - I trust you will find it as helpful as I have. There is a wealth of info stashed away in the memory banks. The Search, Advanced Search tabs can help you.
I have recently replaced my Carefree awning (was over 10 years old). I did some fill in repairs using cloth tape bought from Bunnings - but eventually I spent some cash at a local canvas, vinyl tradie in Townsville. Cost was $850, the material is 4 layer & I'm hoping for a good life out of it. I had asked for advice from Jayco - they referred me to this chap.
He's also given me some useful advice with the skirt on our pop top.
