Do members get any insight into other members from the avatars?
I see opinions are developed about members from posted comments but what about from the avatars displayed.

I own what my avatar shows, its my pride & joy.
I've always had a sports car side to me & I've owned a few of them.
It makes a wonderful alternative to dragging a caravan around with a diesel ute.
It's used for day trips taking a picnic lunch along, preferably up into a mountainous area via a winding road.
Ah, to be young at heart.

My current flat Earth is a subtle message that I am on the side of roughly 50% of flat earthers here. Not!
I think that just about everyone who chooses an avatar picks something they identify with. But I don't think that often means personality, just interests. In my case, freedom and peaceful away from the rat race.
There is one person on here who shall remain nameless, and I wonder why he picked and an avatar that shouts "big oaf" to me. It's hard to shake that assessment. Maybe that's why some long termers here don't have an avatar because others would read too much into the avatar and make assumptions on what it tells about them.

Fun question :)
I've been on this forum for eight years but did not have an avatar until about six months ago when I recalled the cartoon I currently use which was gifted to me as a poster by a customer some years past when the internet was young.
For me it epitomizes the diversity the internet has experienced; we now communicate with people (dogs?) across the world and often have no idea of the person/dog/bot we are communicating with.
I think it summarises some on this forum well :)

Avatars may be very misleading.
I was on a forum some years ago now and there was a guy who contributed regularly.
He had an avatar on there that indicated a picture of a guy with long hair and teeth missing and for some reason I just could not take to him even though his typed information was generally good.
It was a few years later we had a meet up of some from the forum and he and I came along. I met him and he was a great fellow. My opinion of him changed from that meet and greet on.
I think Dougwe has a great Avatar and reading his posts I think he has a caravan which has some link to his picture.
Many use hobby related avatars as do some on here who have their vans and motor homes featured.
I currently use a pic of a white pointer mainly because one of the best experiences I have had was diving with the sharks off Pt Lincoln.
That really was the most thrilling experience I have ever had and it really got the adrenalin pumping when those monsters approached the cage.
They are enormous. I have seen them from a fishing boat but it is a bit different when you are under water with them.

My avatar is just for fun..the thing about an avatar to me is when there is a long thread it is easier to scroll down and recognise the poster / opinion one would like to read...the avatar chosen imo can give a small insight in to the owner of same, though not always as Clarky wrote. disclaimer, I actually don't own a dog.

My avatar should be self explanatory.
I'm a warmongering weapon toting hard drinking, hard fighting member of an elite armoured unit defender of the oppressed, females, children, including ill informed dip****s.
In fact it's the badge of the 3rd Cav Regt of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps of the Australian Army.

My avatar has no particular significance.
It is relevant perhaps only in that it shows a Cane Toad & I am a Queenslander. (A Qld. cane Toad v the NSW C0ckroach). I picked it off a video about Cane toads that was being circulated at the time. It shows the toad drinking a stubbie, but I rarely drink beer these days.
Way back when I had posted enough to become a Guru, another member modified my avatar to include that subtitle, so I changed to their version.
Previously I used a picture of a swaggie from a copy of 'Images of Australia' a collection of Henry Lawson's writings .. see below. But I thought that it may have infringed on some copyright or whatever so I changed it to the toad.
ps. I should read check my posts before posting ..

Fair to say that generally avatars say very little to nothing about their owners, at least not to others. Some of the explanations of why certain avatars already posted in this thread have been used are explanations I never would have guessed. Some folk work hard to hide their real identity too, a valid choice which I respect.
I too post online under my nickname, & have done so consistently for over 20 years, but this anonymity is primarily a surface protection from scammers etc. Most folk who want to know who I am do so, but they still call me Cuppa when we meet.
My avatar is the best pic of me I could manage to find!

A fantastic response regarding the reasons of avatar choices other than the rig pics, like mine.
I have wondered, and perhaps others have also, the background and choice of some of the avatars.
There are many others out there that I still wonder about.
Keep them coming...

When I returned to this forum I did not have an avatar.
Strangely enough there was a topic about the two full moons in one period and that very night I was in a park in NQ and some inconsiderate tenant left their dog tied up and went to the pub for tea.
Their dog howled like a coyote in the cowboy films of late at the same time as I was reading info about the moons.
I saw the pic and I used it as my avatar.
I may change it but I like to have something a little unique.
I recently put up a pic of a mini type Kenwoth copy that someone had built which took my fancy. From memory I posted it in a vehicle type post.
I would use it but it has writing on it,

Hi Mike . No writing on this one! Cheers
Hey Yobarr,
That looks a lot better..
MY Avatar says it all.
All ready for you to use as your avatar, if you so desire! And might I advise that it is a Peterbilt, not Kenworth. Cheers
Bloody hell yobarr, so it is.
Done.
Thanks for the photo edit Yobarr. : thumbsup:
A note to this topic.
I have this avatar because Yobarr made me do it.
Goodbye to the howling hound.
They wouldn't accept my photo for my passport, so I thought I would make use of it in here.
Is that a real Strat?
While we were in London I went to the Hard Rock Cafe museum.
The curator took a shine to me & took the security device off one of Clapton's & SRV's Strats allowing me to have a little play (not thru an amp).
They now have them mounted in frames, I have photos of me playing them.
Didn't wash my hands for a week.
Hi 86GTS , It is a real Strat. A 1963 "L" Series going through a Fender Blues Junior .Beautiful creamy sound to die for.
